    Additional Battery Disco Series 1

    Hello
I have a Disco series 1 with the V8 petrol engine and I would like to fit an extra battery as I will have a Waeco fridge in the back.
Has anyone fitted an extra battery and where did you put it?? as there does not seem to be any room under the bonnet.

The battery goes in the spot directly opposite the original battery, i.e., on the LH front corner. You will need to move the jack and the aircleaner trumpet.

It was easy on earlier Rangies (same front end) as there was nothing in the way and LR had made that spot for the second battery.

also need to move the power steering pump and coil.

Many people make a bracket to fit these to so they sit next to the newly installed battery.

If your is non abs you should also have some room around the air cleaner box as well.

Depending on how old your disco is the coil might not be in the way - my first disco (1992) had the coil mounted on the top of the wheel arch - on my current disco (1997 V8) I got the coil moved to a bracket by the aircleaner box when i had lpg fitted. Also if you get a smallish 2nd battery you might not have to move the power steering reservoir - this time I just bent it out of the way.

You should also fit some kind of battery isolator - I have the 'Redarc' one which seems fine to me but 'Drivesafe' on these forums also supplies units which may be superior.

There are a number of threads on the topic to give you ideas - I certainly used them when fitting mine. Search for dual (or sometimes duel ) battery in the disco one forum.

ps anyone want a spare air filter trumpet? I'm loath to throw it away even though it is no use to me!

This is a link to one that I did recently. If you unsure about 12 volt dual battery set ups I would recommend talking to Drivesafe/Tim at Traxide. As far as Dual Battery set ups vary Traxide kits are very reasonable in my opinion and I believe the technical back up is fantastic. Also I believe you can get a discount if you subscribe to AULRO....

If you are wanting to run a fridge in the back of your vehicle I recommend running a 6B/S cable to negate any voltage loss over the cable run. This will also give you the option of running extra items via a rear fuse box as in my link....
