Check the earth points and wires to alternator.
Hi all,
I have the battery light in my defender staying on dimly whilst driving.
It has always stayed on for a bit until the engine gets a few revs but now it's staying on permanently - albeit dimly.
I have checked the voltage at the back of the alternator and it is about 14.4V.
Whilst I relish the chance to get a new high output alternatorI may be in trouble with SWMBO if it turns out not to be the problem!
Any thoughts appreciated..
Nathan

It's official, a dying alternator.
Bringing an old post back to life......
I've recently gotten my defender registered and also noticed the battery light stay on for a second or so until I revved the engine and it would then go out and al was good. Now, I'm now noticing the battery light ON but also dimly lit all the time now.
Any suggestions as to what might be the cause and where to look to solve or determine what the issue might be?
I'm still very new to owning my '95 TDi defender so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers......
Rob
There's a pretty good chance the alternator brushes are worn out. A month ago I repaired a travelling member's alternator by replacing the worn out brushes with ones rescued out of an old V8 alternator. If you remove your alternator and remove the rear plastic cover the brushes are clearly visible at the very back of the alternator. You may be able to bend the tags the brushes are soldered to and get another 1mm of brush protrusion. I have no idea where one would go for replacement brushes but a good auto electrician might have a clue.
a good opportunity to upgrade to a Disco Alternator.
