    Swivel hub assembly advice

I am about to start reassembling the left front swivel hub but two things are bothering me.

    1. The stub axle oil seal, the one by the CV joint, appears to have been put in the wrong way round, my logic tells me the seal is supposed to keep the oil in the swivel hub. The way the seal came out doesn't agree with what the workshop manual shows in the drawing but the text seems to contradict saying "with cavity side leading press in new seal".
I can't find a good photo of the seal in place.

    2. Is there supposed to be one or two oil seal retaining plates for the big swivel seal ? Mine has one.

    Thanks

    Provided you're talking Disco 1 era :

    1. The drawings can be a little misleading - but with this seal, remember that there is an assembly that goes in after the seal. So cavity leading it is.
    2. Two - but there could have been upgrades - it only has to keep the seal located. You can always use loctite when assembling the swivel.

    Thanks.

Someone has been into the hub before and their workmanship leaves much to be desired so I would not be surprised if things were assembled the wrong way or parts were left out.

Is your understanding that 'cavity side' is the open side, the side where you can see the small tensioning spring?

So with the cavity side leading the face or outer side of the seal will shoulder the needle roller bearing?

That seal stops diff oil from migrating into the swivel housing. Hence being fitted "cavity in".

    That's the other seal.

This seal keeps the swivel hub oil from migrating to the wheel bearing.

    I re-visited a 4 yo post I did about swivels -

    Mysteries of the swivel

and in the photo lo and behold, I put mine in cavity out ( ie you can see the tensioning spring in the photo).

My apologies - I must be getting old.

    But the photos should help.

ps - after 4 years, there's been no problems with assembling it that way

Yes I had been looking at that photo and that's what partly caused the confusion.
