    TD5 Surging issue. Help please?

    G'day!

Got a 2001 Disco Td5 manual with an issue that has me very worried and pulling my hair out. Just got it back from 180 k service last week, no worries. Slight leak from the fuel pump and transfer case which was being monitored. Travelling along on Christmas eve and as I went up through the revs in 3rd and 4th the car jolts and surges around the 22 mark. No worry in any other gears, and no worry if i take it nice and slow up through the revs. Try to do things quickly andd its a different story.

No warning lights, no temp rise, no noises. Just this weird surge and jolt bussiness.

I'm stressing as this issue goes beyond my mechanical wit, and there are few work shops open at the present. Also due to set off on a trip to the vic high country on the 9th, so very very worried. Have run a search and havent had much luck.

Thoughts on what it could be? advice?

    cheers in advance!

check the engine oil for diesel contamination
check the engine revs in neurtal, then again under normal driving conditions if its jerky only at one particular point in the throttle movement its likely to be the TPS on the way out
check the turbo-intercooler hoses for delamination
listen to the return line from the engine with the ignition on but the engine off, if it sounds areated or "surgey" then the pump is not delivering correctly

    disconnect the clutch pedal sensor
disconnect the EGR controls and blank them

if that makes no difference (these are for diagnostic reasons only do not do prolonged running without them)

    disconnect the MAF sensor

    if that makes no difference

    disconnect the MAP sensor

Thats all you can easily do by yourself without decent tools and diagnostics.

    Thanks Blknight!

Have had a breif look at the intercooler hoses and there doesnt seem to be an issue. No diesil in the engine oil either. Will continue with your advice. Cheers!

After the above checks have a look for oil in the red plug at the ecu.
(behind the jack in the battery box).
Usualy at lower revs but worth a quick check.

oops forgot about the oil in the harness issue, along with the red plug on the ECU (its in the jack box under the hood) check the small round plug under the front driverside of the rocker cover

breif looks at intercooler hoses dont count... they will look perfectly normal from the outside....

providing you know how they are ment to feel you can sometimes pick it by squeezing other than that you need to pull them to look.

and your welcome mate, with the potential outcome of me sending my gear over here to perth it may just be that the closest I'm going to come to spannering for a long time is helping on here with diagnostics....

Heyo! I had the exact same problem with my TD5 auto... Spent ages hunting down what was wrong, had everything from turbo to gearbox looked at, only to find the O2 sensor was coated in crud and not working properly. Replaced it, working perfectly since then!

Surge under throttle but not light throttle is only one of two things.

    1) Wastegate modulator
    Or
    2) stuck wastegate.

If there is no excessive smoke then it's one of these.

Or a stuffed MAF,which was the problem with mine, only surged under throttle, particularly hard throttle.Light throttle it was fine.

No O2 sensors on a TD5,was it the sensor on the intake manifold??? It also caused me grief in the past.

also worth minutely inspecting the hoses to and from the wastegate modulator for splits etc.
