Everything Tombie said is quite accurate. Enjoy the longer intervals and reward the environment by not wasting oil too.
Thanks for the reality check Tombie, I am a bit of a sucker for oil changes and NO I have NEVER and NEVER will own a TOYOTA:twisted::twisted::). Seriously, I am currently going through the diesel in the oil problem (last analysis revieled 4.4% fuel contamination although this is after I had the injector seals changed on the same oil). So until I sought this out, the oil will be changed every 5k. The oil level is not going up on the dipstick so I hope all's well. I am using Penrite HPR5 Diesel 5W40 and name brand filters. What do you think? I am also wanting to upgrade the ECU and intercooler and exhaust in the near future with the intention to tow a caravan. What impact will this have on the service interval?
Any input welcome.
Regards
Robbo
Changing the oil every 5k and thinking your motor will last longer is the biggest crock of **** there is,what wears your engine out is cold starting it every time you drive 2mins down the road for a litre of milk.Use good oil,let it idle for a good minute or two first start in the morning and don't do 10 short trips a day.If people spent thier time and money on the important service steps instead of unnecessary oil changes thier would be fewer on here complaining about reliability. IMHO changing oil more frequently can never be a bad thing.
10k is perfectly fine for Tdi, Td4, Td5 and TdV6 IMO. As Tombie says if you aren't doing the KM, do the change every 6 months. Use quality oil and filter, Avoid short runs, and don't idle too much.
Conversely, Toyota 3L and 5L (Hilux 2.8 and 3.0) require 5000km changes, at 7500km there is almost a 100% chance of bearing failure, especially cold starting in cold environments. No matter what oil you are using, 5000km intervals are critical with these engines.

I know that its not a td5. but i change the oil every 10,000kms in my td5, and it have just under 350,000 kms on the clock and runs great. i think some people are wasteing time, money and the oil.
As an aside...I live in a hilly area and have some mean hills and a TDV6 auto. Any comments on oil pressure/circulation when using engine braking on long hills? Am I saving brakes but wearing out the motor?
I admit I have been a 5k oil changer previously in the D1 (350000km and going fairly strong)but with the cost of synthetic oil in the D3 I have gone to 10k.
Engine braking is not bad for an engine.
Tombie and JC are correct:
Manufacturer service intervals are fine.
Use good quality oil and filters.
Don't idle the engine - 30s at startup is enough, any more is bad.
The reasons for changing oil early:
(1) The oil has started to polymerise/break down
(2) Soot levels are too high
(3) Silica (dust) levels are too high
(4) The oil is contaminated with diesel/coolant/acidified
(1) shouldn't happen with a good quality synthetic unless you are towing a caravan through the desert in summer
(2 and 3) modern diesels should have good filtration to stop this (unless you have fitted a crappy aftermarket air filter)
(4) you have a major engine problem and/or have been using poor quality fuel
Consider doing oil analysis instead of changing the oil too frequently. It costs about $25 a pop. Much cheaper than an oil change, and will alert you to any of 1-4 starting to occur (and the presence of wear metals in the oil) - so you can change the oil only if necessary, and fix the underlying problem.
