    TDV6 Oil Changes

The general wisdom on this forum is that irrespective of the specified service interval that is is a good idea to change the oil in your diesel every 5000km - not absolutely necessary but a good idea. We are talking normal use - not adverse use.

So what is the view with the TDV6 - service interval is 12,000km so what is the view of changing the oil every 6000km? Unnecessary or a good idea?

Just off-the-cuff I would say change it every 10,000km which means it will be cleaner than recommended with the added bonus of being easy to remember when to change it...

No expert on the TDV6 but it being a diesel 5000 to 6000km oil change intervals would be good. Depends on how long you intend to keep the vehicle I guess. Use a good quality reasonably priced oil of the correct grade/viscosity and you can't go wrong. Works for my TD5.

    What a waste mate

These are modern diesels, not old 1HZ type.

Even in relatively heavy use a LR diesel (modern) needs nothing before 10,000km more often 15,000km.

    Doing it earlier gains nothing.

Many, many people on this forum advocate 5000km oil changes for 200tdi, 300tdi, td5, td4 and L series landrover diesels, so what makes the tdv6 different to say the td5 or the td4.

No disputing just trying to understand what makes things different - or indeed with these slightly older engine are they wasting their time?

Many people are also "stuck in the 80's"

Nothing ECU controlled needs 5000km changes.

Those changing TD5 oil at less than 10,000km are just wasting money and natural resources. Ditto the TDV6.

I've seen plenty of ECU controlled diesels with 300,000km+ and all service as per log book only. All are going strong.

Secret is quality filters (air and oil) and quality oil. Better to use oil twice the quality and half as often vs half the quality and twice as often.

Again! High end oil and high end filters used as per service interval.
    This includes the "time" interval.
So if youre not getting the KMs up then change the oil by time schedule.

    Thanks

I must admit I did change the Freelander oil every 5000km but that was because it seemed to be the go. Filter was what provided by the local spare parts shop - normally Ryco and the oil was Valvoline Diesel (Low Ash).

Dunno if that has been good or bad but the engine has done 270,000 runs well and does not seem to have any issues. The oil is always dark black so I assume it is doing its job in cleaning the internals of the engine - I get worried when I see people bragging how clean their oil is.

So - for the TDV6 it will be changes as per LR specs and timings.

    Cheers
