Smile injection timing for 300 tdi

    Hi all,

I have just replaced the timing belt in the defender 130 300tdi, before I took off the belt I used a pin in the fuel pump, which I thought was pretty vague, replaced the belt, it wouldn,t start so went back a realigned everything and realised the pin wasn,t in the right spot so I,m assuming he pump was a couple of teeth out to start with, which explains years ago the dyno guy said he adjusted the timing as it was out,
any way I've now got it all set properly but have lost a bit of power and now think I need to set the pump timing back,

My question is' is this something that can be done at home or do you need a dyno or pump mechanic.

    hope it makes sense

    thanks in advance

Did you have the TDC locating pin in the flywheel, were the timing marks lined up, the pin that goes (10mm drill shank) into the pump gear is a tight fit which doesn't allow the pump to move, did you back of the bolts on the front of the pump gear? Regards Frank.

there are 2 pins required. one locks the crankshaft at TDC, this is located underneath the car,
have a look at thisvid the last bit shows the crank pin locking

    Hi guys,

yeah the flywheel was right as was the cam shaft marks, but the injectionpump must of already been out a little bit, I have since lined all three in the right configuration but now the pump must be out a couple of teeth as it has been set to suit the previous incorrect setting, so now I need to set the pump to the correct timing

Have you loosened the 3 bolts on the front of the pump gear, Regards Frank.

    Yes mate,

loosened the three bolts, then tensioned the belt , then tightened the bolts. The trouble is the belt was put on incorrectly last time, then had the dyno run and they adjusted the pump to suit, now the belts in the right spot, the pump needs adjusting back to the correct spot, so I need to find out how to fine tune the injector pump if it is possible

If you follow the instructions for installing the timing belt, with locating pins in place, fit the belt with it tight on your right hand side (pass.side), all the marks aligned, 3 pump bolts loose and tensioned correctly then the timing should be right once you tighten the 3 bolts and remove the locating pins, BTW how did they adjust the pump to suit, Regards Frank.

    Hi Frank,
Yeah thats the problem, Ive just realised there is no fine adjustment on the pump, I was under the impression there was, the car wasn't running as well as before so I assumed the pump was out, after reading the replys on the forum I thought I'd re-check the pump timing and it was out, so I re did it with the threee bolts and were back in business.

    thanks for your help

    regards

now you might need to tweek the pump for a bit extra power, plenty of threads about it. keep in mind its best to fit an egt gauge if you play with the fuel settings on the pump
