If the son is old enough to buy and drive a car, he is more than old enough to get under a car on his back. He may need some pointers but I am sure you could give him some with the necessary encouragement. And Fred is a pretty good guy and is generous with information and will have access to parts as he has a good stock of new and does part out a few wrecks.

Yes he is. In fact he's old enough to go overseas in defence of our way of life, and has done so. Twice. Iraq and East Timor. He is also a regular on this forum. Trouble is he is all thumbs with spanners, and I used to do it for my living. He's more than happy to help, but doesn't know the right questions to ask. I don't think he's asking too much.

Interesting. My original response came out a bit harsh, cos I'm tired. I apologise.

The whole " And Fred is" bit didn't show in your first post.
As for Fred, well he and I were RAEME at the same time, but he was good, and I'd made a mistake.

Yes the forum allows you to edit your post after it has been posted for a day or so, I did not think that it took me that long to add that bit about Freddo. You must have been reading the page as I was posting it.

No, Fred was an apprentice, I was adult trades. Not the same thing at all. We all thought that we were better than them, and them us. Trouble is, they were right. A year of mostly classroom stuff then of to a unit with a toolbox does not a good mechanic make.

Ok, some new stuff. The gearbox wasn't empty, but I doubt that a third of a litre was doing much, as it may not have been getting picked up. There was virtual no metal adhering to the magnet, although if no oil was circulating that may not mean much. And I reported wrongly that the car had no drive at all. It does have drive in fourth, which I suppose means a layshaft failure.

Does it sound terminal, or fixable. I've found a used one for around $900, without the transfer case. Is that a better bet?

And if it was ATF Dexron like the book says, then it's a bloody awful colour.

$900 is around the mark for a second hand unit without warranty, perhaps a tad over.

I've been quoted $1500. Still, I guess if the k's are ok, and a warranty is offered, which I believe to be the case,and the car is back mobile I guess it's a fair result.
