    Rear maxi axle refitment

    Hi all,
Pulled the rear axle out too far when working on my rangie today and its dropped off the locker actuating slide thing (version 1 maxi locker and 28 spline axles)
Now just trying to get the bugger back in which is proving difficult, do i need to pull the actuator block off and line it all up again or can i be lucky and get it to jiggle in with everything still in place??
I guess i could remove the stub axle and then i should be able to look down the housing and see whats going on and line it up that way?

    Cheers,
    Cal.

You are supposed to lock the diff before removing the right axle to prevent this.

I know it's no help but it is in their manual.

However I do not know what you can do now. I suspect you will have to open the diff and manually move the actuator.

Remove the actuator block/piston - you should be able to get it back on then.

    It is only 4 bolts.

i've never had the actuator block off before, anything i should be aware of in there and once its off just a matter of lining it up? I just don;t want to destroy anything in there!!

There are no loose parts or anything if that is what you mean. Just undo the 4 bolts and remove the actuator. On the other side you will see the selector tongue (or fork if you have an old model) which needs to be lined up with the groove in the dog once you have the axle back in.

You need to use sealant/silicone when refitting the actuator block.

all sorted, pulled the actuator off, locking dog was just sitting in the bottom of the housing..
ended up using a large magnet to hold it in the correct position and slid the axle onto it (its only a small hole in the housing!)
Then just lined the fork in the actuator up with the groove.

    Thanks for the help guys!

For anyone interested, this is pretty much what it looks like with the actuator block off, fork in the actuator locates in that groove.

..So i'm in the same predicament.

However when I attempt to remove the actuator, I can remove the 4 bolts but the fork seems to be wider than the hole even twisting it around doesn't seem to want to come out. Am I being too gentle or missing something ?

I have the axle inside the sleeve, and the sleeve under the actuator in what looks like the correct position however the axle wont go straight in the middle of the housing..

Got it back together... but it was a PITA. The hole in the axle is smaller than the one picture above - no idea how it go in there originally.

    ANYWAY
