    AEU2522 CVs - How worn is too worn?

    G'day,

    Heard a faint but inconsistant clicking coming from the front while checking oils etc the other day so I have had a weekend of tearing down the front axles on the truck. I needed to replace the swivel seals and a pinion seal anyway so I thought I would do a complete tear down and inspection maintenance thing. My question is how worn is too worn when it comes to CVs? I have seen many examples of shattered and broken CVs but couldn't find any info on wear and tear etc.

    The CVs from both sides have slight grooves worn into both the body of the CV and the star centres. All balls are OK and there are no cracks or any other damage to the cage or anywhere else.

    What do you guys think? Are these too worn to reuse? Truck is an old 1984 110 flat deck which sees daily driving to/from work (35km round trip) and weekend fishing and general easy to medium wheeling. Running 235.85/16 Maxxis bighorns.

    If you can hear them then they are worn out. Certainly look that way. To get some more use put them back in on opposite sides, then they will click in reverse.

    Im with Bigjon, flop the pair left to right then keep flogging it till they go bang.
    you may get another 27years out of them???

    x3 - swap them LR and they should be fine for a long time to come.

    But when they go bang they make a mess of everything else. Why not replace them now when you've got everything apart and forget about them.

    Chuck one of them in the spares box just in case.

    If you're mad keen with the spanners, then it's an easy job. If you're like me you'll kick yourself for not doing it until they go bang.

    Ahh - but if they continue to be used as they have been they won't ever go "bang". CVs used on-road will just wear until they click. Swap them around they will wear on the opposite side until they click.

    Usually if a CV does go bang (offroad) though, the axle splines may look a bit damaged but they can be reused in almost all cases.

    G'day and cheers for the input.

    I have decided to replace the CVs and retain the old ones as spares. Makes sense to replace while out like they are and everything else (diff gears, axles etc) is in good condition. I do use it off road but I don't thrash it (you know, weekend fishing and fun, followed by driving to work on monday etc). Majority of the off road is in rocks in the river and so the shock loading in the bigger rocks can at times be an issue. I don't thrash it but I don't want to crack a CV while negotiating a river crossing either. I think it comes down to a safety issue for me now I have had time to think about it.

    Now, to place the order so it arrives before the weekend.

    Just be careful what you get - some of the aftermarket CVs are weaker - so may be more likely to "go bang" than those - assuming they are genuine/gkn

    There are no makers mark on the ones I have extracted. The truck has 210,000 km on the clock so I am really not sure if these are OEM/GKN or aftermarket from the previous owner. Previous owner was a high country farmer and the underside of the truck suggests it has been used (dragged) across some rough country.

    I don't suppose you'd like to tell me which ones to watch out for would you? PM me if you'd rather.

    I did have one eye on Keiths Rovertracks CVs but our dollar is tumbling against the greenback and I shuddered when I did the exchange calculations. I didn't even bother looking at Ashcrofts due to the same exchange rate issues (Sorry Dave and Keith).

    One of my CVs started clicking at ~350k km - and only because some water got in the oil. So I think yours are probably genuine (GKN).

    I am not up on which ones are which these days - I think allmakes are the main aftermarket CV. They are weaker, but tend to break the stub shaft. If you search on here there should be plenty of info.
