I happened to get onto this topic with a local gasfitter recently. He mentioned that he uses BBQ gas (propane) in his vehicles with good results. His method of determining the charge was a bit haphazard though - turn off the gas bottle when the air seems cold enough - he's a gasfitter not a refrigeration mechanic....

Sure its available. Bursons at 94 Lear Jet Drive Caboolture sell it with the proviso that it is not used in auto air con. We wouldnt do that would we.Quote:

Dumped some rubbish at the local tip today and looking around for usefull stuff as one does found this gas bottle. I always save these for making bush pigs and they are useful to hold up chassis when removing axles.
This one felt heavy so I thought it must still have gas in it but on closer inspection it was branded R12.
Was R12 commonly stored in these Propane type bottles?
How can I check it is R12?
The freezer in our old 2B FC Camper still has R12 in it so it could be useful.

R12 bottles had a special tap, this one looks like a standard tap. Otherwise, weigh it. Propane is about 500g/litre and so the max weight of propane is 9kg plus the bottle tare.
Definately looks like a standard LPG valve/tap...
- Might it be 'salvaged' R-12', dumped by Dodgy Aircon Co. ???
Valve on that bottle is definitely not a refrigerant bottle valve,it is a standard LPG valve.
Crack the valve & smell the gas .If it doesn't smell like LPG,it could be anything.R12 is odourless.
