Remove A/C system from 93 Discovery

ok, so i am halfway through swapping heads and replacing the cam and lifters in my 3.5 V8 Discovery, my A/C has not worked for a couple of years, and since i am doing a turbo conversion, i want to put an intercooler behind the grille and the condensor takes up a fair bit of that space, it will also make the engine bay much less cluttered

my question is, what is the best way to remove the system? there is probably no gas left in it, but i am still not sure of the best way to empty it, im not worried about releasing it into the environment, more about being exposed to the refrigerant, eg cold burns

i have a feeling i am over thinking this, but id rather wait a day and get some advice before jumping in head first

Two spanners, loosen any coupling e.g. compressor outlet, wait for the hissing to stop, continue undoing. Wear gloves and safety specs if in any doubt.

If it hasn't worked for some time it's likely that there's virtually no gas in the system. However, I'd err on the side of caution and get a local mobile AC tech to recover it for you. Yellow pages would be your best bet.

At the fill point there will be a valve. This is the same as a tyre valve. Just loosen it a bit and if there is any gas it will hiss.

removed the whole lot this morning, and as some predicted, all the gas was gone, now the 450x300x75 intercooler fits perfectly in place of the a/c condensor without needing to move the radiator or anything else
