    Finding TDC

I am about to fix the leaky vacum pump on my 300 TDI. All my research tells me to find TDC before removing. I know about the locating pin. My question how do you know whether it is TDC on 1 or 4.

With a petrol engine I just remove No. one spark plug and with a special whistle screwed in the hole, rotate crank to find the compression stroke.

remove the rocker cover, turn the engine untill the exhaust valve on pot 4 is closing and the inlet is opening.

turn the engine via a ratched on the alternator pully.

I was hoping there was an easier way. Does it have to be No.1 TDC for removing vac pump or will it be the same for 4 TDC.

Removing the pump will not be that much of an issue it is when you get to put the pump back on that you will have to push against the lobe on the camshaft if the camshaft is not correctly orrientated.

You could just rotate the engine once you have the pump off and have the lobe pointing away from the vacuum pump opening to prevent having to push against the lobe when you put the pump back on.

Agree with Slugburner - just unbolt it, no dramas at all, camloabe will just push on plunger
Much easier to install with camlobe not pushing however.
