D2 TD5, Auto Out, WHat else to check?

Im about to put an upgraded transmission in my D2A, with HP24 internals. Whilst the transmission is out, what else should I be checking, replacing, on a car with 170k km, VNT, 500nm Torque.

Only other planned work I had planned was a temp sender into the transmission housing.

Hamish, I would be checking the seals on the transfer case as they are prone to leaking, other than that I do not know what elss to check.
As I am having auto problems at the moment who are you getting to do the work on your transmission?

Engine rear main. Only about $45 and know you wont have to go back there. Ditto the transfer seals especially the o-rings on the (intermediate?) shaft.
A good flush of the oil cooler too.
Worth checking the drive shaft unis since its all out.

    cheers

    Hi Hamish,

there are 2 types of 24 front end, one takes the small TD5 and the medium v8 converter and one type takes the bigger 4.6 P38 converter,

what is the box code of the donor 24 ?

    Dave,
I am assuming he has the 4.0/ 4.6 P38a internals, as we didn't get any other 4HP24's in this country.(IE no D2 4.6 etc) So, Aren't the P38 4 litre and 4.6 litre 4HP24's the same in that department though?

Im assuming you are Dave from ASHCROFT. In which case, I have one of your larger torque converters. Mike Hayes (Tombie) and I bought one each from you last year. I just havnt got around to installing it yet.

Am getting the work done by A&B Transmissions here in Melbourne...well known gurus...

Im meeting with them next week. Im happy to take any advice you have as to what I should be asking for.

The sump will have to be dropped to change the rear main seal. I've just changed mine while my gearbox is out.

no, the 4.0 were all 22's

    the 4.6's were all 24's

the ZF's are ID'ed by the box code which is the second number down on the ID plate,

there were 3 types of 24 used on the 4.6,

    1043 030 061
    1043 030 064
    1043 030 065

the 061 and the 064 are the same apart from minor unimportant differences and these use the biggest diameter 24 converter,

the 065 is a 24 but uses the smaller bodied 4.0 converter,

the TD5 has the smaller of the 3 converter bodies as stock,

if you are fitting the bigger TD5 converter (same body as the 4.0) and you want to fit the 24 internals and more importantly the 24 front end ( with the bigger A clutch) you can only use the 065 as the donor,

if you use a 061 or 064 as the donor you can only fit some internals and not the front end as the front end will only take the biggest 4.6 converter not the medium 4.0 type

we have recently managed to make an adapter to squeeze in the big 4.6 converter which you can use with the 061/064 but these are only advised with very tuned TD5's
