    Tubing clamp for welding

Came up with an idea tonight that might be of interest to those like myself that occasionally weld a bit of tubing, but struggle to clamp it for tacking.
Not so bad if you are using a MIG as you can just hold and tack one handed, but harder with a TIG.

A couple of hose clamps and some short bits of wire make a great clamp:

Apologies if its one of those things that "everyone knows". It was new to my brain at least

if its just for tacking you can also do it with some of those large heavy duty elastic bands

If your going to be doing a lot of pipe work get some of these, they are wide enough to drill 3 3/8 holes equally spaced. Just clamp them over the join and tack in the 3 spots. Very quick and easy.

    pipe clamp

ViceGrip pliers have an adjustable pipe clamp version. It is like normal wide jawed vice grips with four self adjusting feet that locate around the pipe in four places. I prefer clamping pipe into a piece of angle iron. Not as suitable for your tight bend situation though.

So bloody obvious you want to slap yourself for not thinking of it first!

I always struggle with getting metal bits lined up, I'll use this tip for all types of welding.

Great advice, but looking at the photo can you tell me how you got permission to weld indoors?

I think the saying is along the lines of "Its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission".

Do all my TIG welding inside as there's no draft. Worst part is you cant shut the back door with the 15A power lead running in from the garage....

    .....just joking....

But I did borrow SWMBO's fire blanket from the kitchen yesterday. Can't have MIG spatter on my newly painted chassis.
