TD5 Harmonic Balancer repair project! Check it out.

I have figured out how to dismantle the TD5 harmonic balancer! (No, not rev hard when it is wobbly!).

It was wobbly as shown in this great set of instructions someone made here:

www.discovery2.co.uk / Crankshaft pulley* / TV damper replacement

I suspected the second video demonstrated not soft rubber but a stuffed bearing.

I pressed it apart in the order shown left-right, tapping out the rubber disc (pressed in with an outer thin metal ring) with a screwdriver after marking its position. Now I can replace the bearing, which is stuffed beyond compare!! It's a 6206DU2 NSK.

    More pics on reassembly!

    Wish me luck!

    Dave

PS moderators, feel free to delete my post questioning how to do this; started a new one as the title is more indicative of the content.

    Cool All done!

Untested but looks all good! Pressed and drifted back together with # NSK 6206V bearing. Used a little loctite flange sealant around the radius of the metal ring that contains the rubber; it went in very tight anyway. Wobble movement gone, rattle when dropped gone. Feels solid. Yes I have yet to find one bolt!

    Option 1) New one - $1200
Option 2) Second hand from TRS - $500 Inc postage
    Option 3) Bearing - $11

Lesson: Get to it before worn bearing allows rubber to flex to pieces! Take off the serpentine belt and check it's movement. It may have a tiny amount of flex back and forth as all bearings have minute play. But if the pulley can touch the harmonic balancer, get it out!

Now I have two balancers! (I went option 2 before doing experiment )!

Anyone around Katanning wants a hand or the use of the big mother torque wrench give me a PM: although sometimes I'm hard to catch - not one of those everyday email people! Torque wrench is 1" drive or a 3/4" adapter up to 400ft/lbs. Also if you want to exchange a crank pulley where the rubber looks good but it has 'gone soft' let me know via PM!

    Happy Land Rovering!

pretty sure that is the same part number for the bearings in the idlers for the serpentine belt. again, they are quite expensive to buy the pully and are " not servicable" but i pushed the bearing out and replaced with $10 jobby

Evening all. I live in South West England and have just joined the forum. I must confess that its largely due to the fact that my crank pulley is on its way out and I was led to this post whilst searching google for ways to repair the pulley. A new part over here is £300 quid which is extortionate IMO. Anyway, has the repair method been a success and do you have any links as to where I could obtain a new bearing? Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Paul

    Thumbs up turner engineering uk

I bought a new genuine crank pulley from turner engineering uk. all up far less money than buying one here. I always use paypal and there has never been a customs problem because the items are under a grand.

    Hi Dave,
I'm guessing you have been asked this a few times already, but how did crankshaft pulley repair hold up?
Sorry if you've answered this already, I'm new to this forum thing.
    Cheers,

    Angry tried harmonice balancer fix

hi all have tried this using permatex P48020a (rubber toughened cyanoacrylate adhesive) it went together very well but failed 12months later possible due to glue's relying on surface contact. the glue work only on about 2/3 of the surface around the ring, but on closer inspection after pulling it apart, only aportion of that suface held. the rubber has a 30mm rip in it thus a new one is on the cards. i belive that this could work if the glue had more body to it. $850 later i have a non genuine one as genuine harmonic balancers are hard to find even from a landrover supplier.

read a little more on this topic
will not say anything bad about the company. when I have only read on its home page that it is not original but produced in your home country? should then no one on this site know about it and if so, it would certainly go and buy them cheaper for you if you can buy them directly.
