    300TDI propshaft question

    Hey folks

I'm just replacing the front propshaft on my defender and wondering which way round they are supposed to sit!? Maybe a retarded question (I'm no mechanic) but the old prop had the sliding joint at the rear and in the Haynes manual it says the sliding joint should be at the front. Does it make much difference which way round and if the old one was in back to front could it have done any damage (it was pretty wobbly prior to me removing it).
Your infinite(?) wisdom is much appreciated
    Andy

I always put the slip joint nearest the transfercase, and always have.

Seems more sensible to me to try and keep it out of the dirt.

    Hi Andy
Thats right, about the slip joints to the transfer box.

But! the front prop yokes should be out of phase by at least one increment of the splines, this is done to minimize harmonic vibrations caused by variations in angular changes as the universal joints turn.

ref; Defender '96/'97MY Workshop manual, section 47, chapter Description and operation, page 1.

    Cheers Arthur
