    tickle up? whats involved?

howdy, this week im getting a new 2.5" exhaust made up and then its time for a tickle up, already had the timing pump reco'd about 2months ago(leaking again already but they are going to fix that).

Just wondering what a tickle up involves, do they play with boost? clean or reco injectors? or are there different variations of tickle ups?

ive had a bit of a look around but cant find much info on whats involved but most people seem to be pretty happy with the outcome.

    96' 300tdi disco.

    Cheers,
    Jarrod.

    Look up the thread entilted
    d1 injector pump tweaking

After all, a tweak is worth at least 2 Fiddles and 3 Tickles !!!!

oops, I should have been more specific. I was wondering what diesel mechanics actually do when you ask them for a tickle up.. ..its not something im particually interested in doing myself.

just wondering what gets covered in the process.

    cheers.

for eg. I guess what im hoping for.. and I could just be dreaming.. is to turn up afterwards and have them say.. "the disco is running much better, we were able to up the boost to 17psi, up the fuel, give you more power while keeping your exhaust temp and smoke within a reasonable limit"

Also search for hydrogen injection or Browns Gas.

    typically...

they'll redo the injection timing and give it a degree or 2 more advance.

then they'll adjust the boost compensator so that it delivers more fuel at lower boost to help wind the turbo up

then they'll wind the fuel up at the max boost point

then they'll tweak up the boost pressure.

Insert more fuel and more air. Like any other engine modification with a power gain in mind. 70+% of power increases come from cylinder head, valve gear, and camshaft changes. A diesel engine needs fuel injection changes to use the greater supply of air.

MR Automotive at Redcliffe use the term 'tickle up' to just refer to adjusting the injector pump to deliver more fuel as per the tuning threads around. That's all they did for me but well worth it. No boost changes.

If you are redoing the exhaust, ditch the centre muffler and replace with a straight through pipe. Does make a real difference to:

    * Turbo spool up at lower revs
    * Torque curve seems to keep going at upper end of rev range instead of dying
    * Slightly lower EGTs (the EGT alarm in my Madman EMS2 goes off less often when towing up frequently visited hills). I'm guessing 20-30 deg C less EGT.

ok, so ive budgeted about $800 for a tickle up so hopefully for that price i'll get the fuel + boost adjustment, I figured that the term 'tickle up' must vary from the mechanic to the vehicle and to the owners budget.

I am getting mine done at Northern Rivers Diesel in Lismore, this guy has a great reputation and seems to know his stuff, i'll document and let you know what my 800 bucks bought me.

    cheers.
