quick question! in a defender the front shocks are in the middle of the springs which does make fitment annoying a tad more than nissan and toyota i was wondering if if time was spent on making up brackets would there be any reason why landys cannot have the shock on the outside of the spring?
no reason why, just might be a bit tight on space. That being said there are several different dual shock set ups for land rovers getting around, these run the stock position shock as well as a 2nd shock mounted outside the spring. Theres no reason you couldnt just leave out the shock inside... check out this thread.

thanks guys :D why i ask is because i am about to order some racerunner eye to eye shocks havnt decided if i am going to go 14",16" or 18" travel yet but need to come up with a better idea for mounting shocks hence outside the springs i was thinking
Tell me more Toombie...
how where why?
stress fractures to top spring buckets that is.
S
is it due to stress being placed on one side rather than directly in the middle of the tower? thanks for the heads up :)
The mounts up front without an internal fitted too place torsional stress at the front of the spring mount.
Eventually they fracture.
