I have a problem with this car and dont know much about the electronics.

IM got a few tanks of 4km/l recently after battery issues.
at that rate it leave a trail of wet soot on the grass and fowls the plugs.
and you have to change the oil and I would need to have it repaired.

It was the doing this when i bought it 12 months ago[also winter].
I fitted 8 new plugs of the same brand.it had a varied colection.

normally i get 6-8 km/l.and long hour runs its better than 10 KM/l.
    similar to my 89 rangerover.
I often read others getting dread full consumption,a freind in england told me his 2 carby rovers on a good day got 12 MPG.

most of the gas conversions are compromise and 5KM/l happens.

this week i have 370KM and the gauge shows 1/4 it runs for some time after the tank reaches empty.so i guess 50 liters.

Your fuel consumption figures are dodgey at best but thats only a base line to work out that there is something unusual going on for you to be getting X amount per litre one tank over a different amount over the next doing the same driving.

I can tell you though, I have a 3.9 Auto Discovery which turns continuous 15/100 on petrol (but only run on petrol on HWY runs) and roughly 18 to 19/100 on LPG around town. and my TDI Auto runs 15/100 pretty much all the time unless on a long run when I get it down into the 12's but I'm running 32's, Steel bar, roof rack and 2" lift pumps tuned for power over economy and EGTs only reach about 660deg max on long uphill stretches.

As far as your starting issue goes, it sounds the same as the Rangie I'm working on for my mate which I'm not really getting anywhere with as yet.

    Cheers Casper

I adjusted untill the misfire disapeared.

now has lots of go,there is a knocking noise coming up through the intake manifold at different rpm loads thats strong enough to feel.im thinking piston skirts.
This sounds a bit worrying as you said there has been lots of pinging which either means it is advanced too far or running lean.

The one thing you have not said in this thread is what the timing is set at.

Should be around 9 to 10 deg at warm Idle.

The soot marks on the garage floor can be fairly normal from a unleaded car and same with the moisture in the tail pipe as when the exhaust cools it draws air in and if the air has a lot of moisture it condensates and can cause a bit of soot wash out on start up mainly if you give it a rev on start up which cleans the moisture out of the exhaust, the rest is burned off as steam.

The old leaded engines didn't produce as much soot and you could tell how they were running by the colour of the pipe.

fuel consumption I quote as a tune base line.Im not measuring to the last liter.I got frustrated with the range rover doing a similar thing.Im a mechanic but dont have a scope or have been unable to get sencible information on the 2 cars.the only advise i did get was fit carbies off my SD1,delo or autronics.

pinking with smoke--ive had issues with rings before with lean burn engines.the p76 and magna was dreadfull for this.

I found when tuning nissan efi computors fuel use over a normal drive was a good guide and very little change occured after you changed the chip.
    this feels like its relearning.

timing.this was done when i bought it.it had a new distributor.advancing it a little it refuses to crank over and retaded a little the temp goes up.
the P76 loved 0-10 depending on fuel.I havnt got down to checking cam timing,im convinced its electrical.

the car is unleaded but no catalist.1993.I only use 91 ulp.

Ive decided to buy a AFM.$125 for new item.
I havnt got a fuel presure gauge but thats on the shopping list.
after rego i might get the injectors serviced.

water temp sender was replaced last year.the old one[was a new one] and tested ok.it has a new water pump,I replaced the visco hub as it ran hot when i towed.the reason the owner sold it.

when i tow a trailer with scrap i get 300K on just over 50L.the trailer is a ton empty and i load up to 2 ton.I have to fill up after trip into town.
its only 18K to work but its 90KMh road.

roof rack cage on the 89 pajero diesel acted almost as a sail.it was worth while to remove it after use.also i tested that fuel ratio changes about a semi length off a hyway bound pantech.you dont need to tail gate.

did a service today.its done 8000K since last oil change.

The airflow meter is on it way from UK.

    replaced BPR6ES plugs.they look good.
    I bought BKR5ES plugs as they have a 5/8 socket.normally they come with V groove,these didnt.

I checked the timing,it was set about 15 deg.i static set it to factory 3 deg.

the engine started first hit without smoke.i warmed up the engine to adjust the mixture.when i switch it off it refused to restart for sometime.

    its since restarted evertime.

air flow meter arived today, easy to fit.

    would start.
disconcted the battery to see if it clears a memory.then restarted with it running very sick.

once it warmed up I disconected the tps and adjusted the mixture.
I turned it several time anticlockwise.

it restarted every time and drove ok.

I replaced the plugs in the neighbours car with the same plugs from the same supplier and they are V groove.

I would be checking the IAC valve on the back of the plenum, first to see if the 3 allen head bolts are tight, then I would check that the vacuum lines going to it are not split or loose, then I would remove it and clean the plunger and the seat and refit, while back there I would also be checking the fuel pressure reg. for leaks and operation, Regards Frank.
