EGT will be lower becuase the exhuast flows better, your Vechile will have a Cat so there is little point in removing the muffler unless you remove the cat aswell,
You can use a dump pipe from an early td5 or just cut it out at the same time as the muffler.

Will it drone at all?
A little under load, but not on the highway


What sort of benefits have others experience with it? And really is it worthwhile?
Lower EGT, faster turbo spool up, more power, Nice sound (will need to remove the cat aswel for these results)

Has anyone got any youtube clips of the sound difference?

Do it, and remove the cat as well if you haven't done so yet!

Your EGTs will come down, your turbo will spool up quicker and small children will run away scared when you put foot

I took mine out, it sounded cool on the outside, noisy on the inside, then I put it back in again. The power change is marginal as the exhaust is already a good size. The restriction is in the flex, not the mufflers.

yes I removed mine and replaced it with 2 1/2" staino sports muffler and also removed the resonator. its hardly noticeable inside the car unless all windows are down, there was a definite performance increase, and outside under power it sounds quite nice, a deep throaty kind of sound but not loud.

Annoyingly noisy inside, very bad when towing, no performance or economy increase but sounds good outside

Not sure where everyone's getting their facts for lower EGT's.... Removing the muffler won't drop your combustion temps I'm afraid.

It does drone under load, sounds good but its starting to do my head in a bit but that's probably due to it being an auto and having different rev characteristics.
I'm going for a straight thru resonator type muffler to remove the drone and pulling the rear resonator out instead.

In a manual it's quite different however and a lot better.

The exhaust system is designed to remove exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold. This is where most EGT sensors are fitted. The quicker you remove those gases, the cooler the manifold will be.

By removing the Cat and middle silencer box, you are basically free-flowing the exhaust. The exhaust gases can escape faster, and the manifold is cooler.

If you fit an EGT monitor before and after cat/silencer removal you will see the difference - I did on my previous D2 Td5.

The EGTs are an indicator for what's going on inside the engine during the combustion process and are a function of fuel/ air ratio and inlet air temps, not exhaust flow.
