For the really greasy, rutted, lumpy clay creek exits we (3x Simex shod vehicles - D2, Def, Patrol) we just drove them. Coming out of Chinamens something we all only just got out. The other advantage is that we ran then all down at 20psi I think it was (might have been 25, but I think it was 20) and the bias carcass maintained the tyre form but the pressures absorbed just about all of the corrugations, we're talking corrugations that were throwing shadows. This said, we also trucked to and from Cairnes.
If not, I would be running muds.
Also, yes you should have good tread depth for 2 reasons. Firstly it will provide greater puncture protection, and also it will allow the tyres to bite down better when it gets slippery.
