    MAF cleaner supreme

    Oven cleaner!

Yep. Tried the rest (CRC, WD40, pcb cleaner ...) without success. Now vroom.

I've a TD5. Always spluttered when I put my foot down - 1/2 second go followed by 1/2 second pause - to the point of not accellerating at all. Even pulling out into traffic was a pain.

Disconnecting the MAF the TD5 had muscle but with the growls came fuel consumption that skyrocketed. Hoped a recent turbo rebuild might fix things too but no. Then it occured to me that the element of the MAF might be mechanically sensitive but, to be heated as it is, it must be chemically tough (to oxidation) so I hit it with oven cleaner a couple of times and ten minutes later the TD5's running just like I'd dreamed at last. ps - had the D2 for about 5000k's.

Mate I hope I am wrong for your sake.

Oven cleaner is caustic and will have a corrosive effect on the fine element sooner or later.
If you cleaned it all out you may be ok, but I wouldnt do it again.

    Just my thoughts.

    cheers

Thanks Strangy for your thoughts but I still reckon oven cleaner is a good choice for the reasons that follow.

I believe the LR MAF uses a hot wire filament from reading the manual and looking at the black discolouration (or burnt deposit) previously on mine. And being hot wire it's probably platinum - that makes sense to me and while not a proof Wikipedia supposes hot wire MAFs use platinum (please note cold wire sensors are out there but not my concern)

On that basis I think the LR MAF filament could resist much stronger chemical attacks than oven cleaner which is pretty nasty but doesn't even touch stainless. Added to that, when used, the oven cleaner seemed to remove some of the black and leave the filament shinier as far as I could see using a magnifying glass. Oh and I hosed of all the cleaner with copious volumes of water.

Finally my MAF remained a piece of junk after trying ordinary cleaners and now its working, i.e. had nothing to loose.

    Cheers.

    BE WARNED

Further to my earlier opinions - my "cleaned" MAF was over-fuelling so was damaged. Don't know if that is because I hosed it too hard or because of the chemical attack. I did note someone saying one of the elements was tin or something - and that certainly wouldn't hold up to oven cleaner as Strangy cautioned.

New VDO MAF is a treat.

    Thanks all.

I would say based on the lack of responses alone, everyone ignored the advice.

If the oven cleaner didn't set off a few lightbulbs then hosing it out should do....

I've added the cleaning of the MAF to my list of regular maintenance items - every 5000 k's it only takes a few minutes to remove and clean with the purpose made CRC MAF Cleaner. I figure that it's better to give it a regular clean rather that wait until it's so filthy that it's causing a problem and is then harder/impossible to clean properly.
