What did you do on your Landy today?

Today I kept dismantling 'Rustry Bob', I can now get to the gearbox and lift it out of the chassis.

A Rolling series 3 chassis with a diesel engine for 'AlexH' arrived in my yard this morning on a car trailer, it was towed down from Launceston by forum member 'Phibbzy' behind his tidy three door D1.

A quick rat around a burnt out D1 in the yard scored 'Phibbzy' a couple of good rear door hinges along with a spare wheel mount. He then returned with a warning ringing in his ears about not letting his good lady ( who was with him ) drive his Disco, I explained that my wife has now claimed ownership of 'Daisy' ( a 5 door 300TDi auto ) after driving it a couple of times when I had it to use while I was replacing the Defender's clutch a couple of years ago.
She fell in love with 'Daisy' and it's her daily driver now. :wub:

Was yesterday, but still.....

Spent about an hour getting the car level on the SLS. Its now within about 1mm of being perfect. I can live with that :D

Cause it was raining, I did it behind the roller door. Yup, set it too high, and couldn't get the car out afterwards. :(

Dropped it about 5mm, and took it out to dinner :D

Why lift that high?

Clear the ground and that's it...

No need to lift any higher.

My wife can lift and change a 33" tyre and she's not an Amazon.
The secret is to lift enough to slide the top of the stud on then lift a little more until the wheel falls onto the hub.

Because the Earth isn't flat, and sometimes the jacking point is over a place lower than desired relative to said jacking point. Punctures and other problems are not courteous enough to only occur on smooth, hard ground.

Except for two things:
1. Tombie is responding to a comment that specifically mentioned jacking on a level, concrete surface
2. Bemm52s original post mentions he lifted the wheel 50mm off the ground. If you've got the bottom of your wheel 5cm off the ground, it should be enough to change it.

Regarding those two things
1. Bemm52 was testing things out in a controllable environment, an intelligent thing to do, but it won't always be like that.
2. 5cm on concrete does not translate to adequate clearence once off-road. You may inconveniantly discover that later on.
A person may also change tyre diametre later on and reduce clearence further. Not saying that going up in diametre by 100mm is likely mind you.

There are arguments both ways, but no one correct answer on how much height you need to jack an axle up to get a wheel off the ground, as every situation is different.
I remember one trip to Jenolan, a Jeep diffed out on a rock, the ground around was very soft sandy loam that had been recently pushed up by a dozer/grader, even with a reasonable backing plate the bottle jack sank in and ran out of travel. A hi-lift was called in and was at its limit after similarly sinking in to the dirt, but we could pack under the tyres enough to keep the diff clear. A taller bottle jack may have been enough, and a fair whack safer than a spindly hi-lift at fulll reach.

I said why lift that high above the ground...

Regardless of where the ground is you only need to lift high enough to pull the tyre off/on.

And one can always roll forward or backward a little with a flat ;)

Or a simple plank/maxtrax etc. to space the jack up.

And it only diffed out in one direction ;)

The point I was trying to make :)
I've used the spare tyre in a pinch.
Tell me, what would the intended use of a hi-lift jack be?
Because my Tigerz one has a big label on it saying "Not for vehicle maintenance or wheel removal", so I'm a tad unsure of what it's actually for :p

How do you fiddle with the SLS? I was getting around to a qn thread about the level of my back bumper vs the level of my garage floor and if I should worry about it...
