Thursday, took some tourists whale watching - 180km round trip on bad gravel roads; Friday, a 500km round trip to take granny to dentists in the city. Got home, pulled into drive and heard a tinny rattle from RH rear. Sounded straight away like a brake backplate/stone guard. Sure enough, RH rear had sheared off at all 3 of the fixing points even though bolts were tight. Checked the LHS, also on the way out. Removed both the useless tin pieces of s/crap. Seems like they keep more dust in than out anyway.
Also took off wipers and shroud at bottom of windscreen to lube and tighten up wiper linkage - wipers were on for 6 hours yesterday and began to make a slight clonking noise. Found 3 of the four securing nuts under the shroud were just finger tight, making the wipers clonk a bit. Drivers side wiper arm had also partially stripped the splines on the spindle - explains why the previous owner had advised me to "carry a 13mm socket to tighten the wiper arm, it sometimes comes loose".
Re-fitted with loctite, hopefully will hold it. Add to the list of bits to get from the breakers one of these days.
Decided to practice changing the wheel, in case I ever have to do it at the roadside; found the pvc wheel cover impossible to get off because both it and my fingers were ice cold; in the end, because it was brittle with cold I ripped the bugger, so its staying off for good. Probably a happy accident, imagine not being able to change a wheel just because of a stuck wheel cover.... while I was at it I found 3 of the 6 bolts holding the wheel hanger to the door were loose, worth checking.
Also adjusted the rear door catch, hoping to reduce the amount of dust that gets past the seal - not confident of that working though.
Another satisfying couple of hours in the garage - beats housework.
Now back to browsing Landy Forums while listening to England slaughtering the Indians (again) on Test Match Special....
Its hard work, but someones gotta do it...
Started Fred's motor ( 300TDi ) again today for a prolonged test and managed to keep it running at a fast idle for well over a hour, while I fiddled nearby with the motor out of a Fergy TEA20.
No radiator fitted just a return pipe fitted to circulate the coolant, no manifolds, so it was easy to observe the exhaust ports, a very basic electrical circuit rigged up to keep the fuel shutoff solenoid open and supply power to start with.
Finally found that the motor is loosing coolant by varying amounts through three of the exhaust ports, so tomorrow its off with the head, So I can do more than just look down it's throat.
Mentioned the other day that I was going to put in an egr blanking kit as well as my lift kit. Well managed to round off the inside of the allen headed bolts so was not happy. At least I didnt break the heads off though! Took the D2 down to the local mechanic who quoted me like 3 hours work to remove the bolts and that why did I want to remove the EGR anyway - I'd only get 5 extra horses etc etc. I told him it was to do with engine longevity and not extra horses. After chatting to him for 20 minutes he confessed that he'd never actually worked on a landy. So he didnt know his elbow from the preverbial!
Anyway took it down today to a mate with a machining shop. He is flat out and said he could fix it but he'd have to charge me and had I tried loctite anti freeze? So drove to the local farm machinery dude and he didnt have any. While I was there I bought a good set of allen key sockets and a good set of vice grips (cost about a hundred all up) and some new m6 high tensile 10mm bolts.
Long story short I got the bolts out!! Got them loose by hitting them with a cold chisel (without the cheap wine) and used the vice grips to undo them. So managed to get both bolts out and get rid of the EGR system. Bloody ripper!
So have installed the EGR kit, blanked off the vacuum hose and disconnected the electronics to the EGR control thingy. So after the gasket goop I put on dries (by tomorrow) I will be home and hosed.
Chuffed to the max and spent the money that would have gone to a mechanic on some cool tools.
herc's steering box is back in, as is the damaged radiator from the viscous fan flying of so should be all good to have a run again..ahhh v8's don't they have a terrific rumble
