Just had my Defender serviced and the mechanic rang to tell me when he drained the oil the sump was way overfilled by about 3 times. The extra fluid was diesel mixed in with the oil. He traced it down to a faulty O ring on an injector. Hopefully it has been picked up before any damage was done. Makes me wonder why you would design an engine like that??? Where a failure can result in fuel leaking inside the engine!!!!!!!!! Just glad I wasn't travelling through the middle of the outback.

3x the amount. I think he may be exagerating as that would make it around 24 litres. You would have had a run away engine. Not being judgemental but dont you check your oil.
Either way you are a bit fortuanate that it was picked up before significant engine damage occured.

Had similar happen to me on both the Defender and the Disco in the past 2 months - first indication was excessive fuel consumption (I monitor every tank full) - although only 8 to 10mm high on dipstick.

At least your engine has had a good flush with the diesel in the oil and now you'll be surprised at how clean the new oil is when you next check the level. Which I assume you are now doing more regularly.

Mounted Reversing LED's

Well not quite today but close enough, I installed some 15w reversing/work lights and two 24w rear spot lights.

These are on eBay from BrightLightAutoParts and I was initially scepticle of the performance of LED's but I am now a convert.

What prompted me was that I nearly reversed into a car in the car park at night as well as trying to reverse on rocky track when I got stuck. These lights just make such an awesome difference!

The 15W units only draw about .5amps each and the 24w units about 1.8amps each.

Bit of an unfair comment there!

Back in the days of carbies it was easy to fill an engine with fuel from muck or damage in the seat/needle.

Vehicles parked nose down could fill the engine.

As posted by Others a weekly check would have given you the heads up.

fitted Fuel Regulator on my other TD5 today, thats both done now so shouldn't have any surprises fuel wise in the future.

Confirmed diff lock isn't working; front wheels in the air, neutral selected and the front prop turns no matter what I do with the darn lever...:confused:

The conrod is suspect as oil does not compress, it came about by the seal in the turbo letting go and oil filling up the air intake and then finally number one cylinder, so the result of all that, would be a bending of the conrod.

Well much cursing and swearing later the Alternator is fixed!
The brushes were almost non existent and the +ve one was jammed in position - hence no charge!
All good now!
