Had a massive front end shimmy that was getting worse through last week and the weekend.

Finally crawled underneath after work on Monday night and found the steering damper bushes loose.
Tightened the nut on the pin end at least 1.5 threads, and gave the Panhard rod clevis bolt and nut a 1/4 turn for good measure.
Problem mostly solved (now for another ounce or so of counteract balance beads in each tyre)

put the radiator back on - put in new thermostat (missing) , new thermostat housing gaskets , new o ring. put a flush through it - just emptied it and will have another go before the coolant goes in. Found out the new radiator drain plug I ordered is too big? And you cant judge where the fan is all that great when its running. Ouch.
    cheers,
    D

Its only masking another issue Rick... on road a Damper shouldnt be needed...

Check Panhard, swivel preload and wheel bearings etc....

After two weeks of not being driven, the six-year old battery in George was pretty weak, although it did kick over, so I gave it a day on the multi-stage charger and now its much snappier. May be a new battery on the horizon. Still, I suppose six years is a good effort from a wet-cell battery.

I reckon it's wheel balance Mike.

Wheel bearings are fine, panhard is fine, tie rod ends are fine, front shocks seem ok. ( I've had a dead shock cause a bad shimmy hitting a bump mid corner)
Swivel pre load could be sus, but the shake is right between 80 and 90 which is where front wheels will tend to shake if they have a dynamic balance issue, and the difference between 4 and 5 ounces of Counteract beads made a big difference but they need more IMO.

My aux battery has died in the Tdi so I'm on the hunt for replacement options. Easiest is going to be another D34 optima but I'm interested in something with more than 55Ah for the money. My V8 D1 came with a well engineered bracket to relocate the power steering reservoir so I'm thinking about swapping that over and fitting a N70Z size AGM.

paid someone else to do...(a week in the shop and a grand later) but two lower ball joints and a front? tailshaft repair... apparently surprising on a vehicle that doesn't go offroad. Maybe I need to show the speed bumps and railways a bit more respect..
