While on the subject of towing/recovery and balls, I was wondering what the consensus was on the following method which I witnessed being taught by a country NSW VRA group as an acceptable method of attachment.
The second photo (using rope) shows it more clearly.

I'm surprised that that was being taught Roger! I'm no expert, but it has been drummed into me that you don't recover from a tow ball, full stop. Several examples of airborne towballs, including ones that have crashed through windscreens and tailgates were enough to reinforce the point.
looking at the pics, it's not looped just around the actual ball, it loops around the tongue of the bar also.
The second pic shows that it is the tongue that seems to take the load and the ball is just a pin to stop it sliding off
Re tow balls there are tow balls and there are rated towballs.
But as said earlier it was drummed into us never use a towball.
I think its better than just over the ball but I'm with never off the ball.
That said I've seen it done at work.
My reasoning for it is removing as many unnecessary bits from the equation as possible, every less bit, particularly heavy metal ones, is one less thing that can fly off and kill someone.

Brownie points eh Chris,,, what are you after :p
If you are going to go to all the effort to tie that knot, why don't you just remove the tongue and insert the strap into the receiver and use the pin. I have done heaps of snatches and winched from the tow hitch using the pin with no problems at all. The other good thing is, if it does break the pin, it weighs a hell of a lot less than a tow ball so won't do as much damage.
