Ok today i rang Pete from PCB Land Rovers and ordered 2 new rear drive flanges for the s3, as the spare ones i have are only good for getting out of trouble. He asked if i had parts for a 4 cyl landy, a floor centre tunnel cover and a front cover at the centre as well. I had a look and they were in my pile of bits n pieces so a deal was made. Great stuff these land rovers. Bartering for parts is even better.

Got the heater tap and flap working in the s3 today. Bit late for winter but now i understand what does what with the 2 levers. Fan has 2 speeds too i found out today. Just need to get a round vent cover for passenger side and refit demister hose and vent on pass side as well as they were blocked off with foam.

Started TC change out
Took the drive shafts and handbrake assembly off the TC, removed the cubby box and hatch above the TC. The front drive shaft bolts were real tight and took some getting off, same with the 4 bolts holding the handbrake assembly. about 2 hours, workshop time is restricted :(
Lesson learnt generally when working on the TCs, use only six sided sockets. the bolts are tight and the 12 sided sockets just aren't up to the job. if you round off a bolt in a the wrong place its a pain. cheers simmo

TC change out cont'd
I have Friday off to make a looong weekend, so we put the reco TC in this evening after dinner. about 1.5 hours. after some cleaning and fiddling etc. the disco TC Hi Lo selector lever has a smaller hole than the defender , so we drilled it out to 8mm to suit the defender configuration, and changed the terminals on the difflock switch wires etc. We used 2 x 125 mm M10 guide bolts, and the TC slid straight in as we turned the gears from the output shafts.
I figure another 2 hours tomorrow evening connecting the drive shafts, linkages, wires, filling with oil. etc. and we'll be ready to go.

Removed the worn out drive flanges on the s3 and fitted 2 new flanges and splurged and fitted new hub caps too. I drained the diff and refilled it and fitted a new type of fill plug that has a shoulder on it and seals with a copper washer. At least i dont have to fit the other diff cover now. The new plug stops ppl from screwing the plug right in on a tapered thread and the plug screwing itself into the diff and falling inside. Once you stretch a tapered thread it dosent come back into shape so the cover would need to be replaced. Thats what the new plug stops from happening. All good now. Time for a road test. Where to? Maybe cape york? Nahh another day, i hope.😆😆

Noticed the clutch master on the s3 leaking as well. Fitted new master. All good. Master cyl was for a trailer. Just had to grind the outer circumference of the original pushrod washer to make it fit. Too easy.

On the 2a, tightened the pinch bolt on the bottom of the steering relay, removing slight wander. Drove down to the village to pick up mail. Creek only axle deep, and hard bottom, river about two feet below the bridge, falling, but the rest of the trip was sloppy in spots and also very slippery in a few places. Last gate was in the middle of a lake about six inches deep. Fortunately, my neighbour has most of the gates open at the moment. Saw him in the distance on a four wheeler.
