R 380 oil ooler.jpgR380 thermo stat & oil filter 1.jpg
I removed my oil filter and fitted a new prototype design without any thermostat, hoses etc , those hoses , fittings and hose clips etc are a potential leaking places. Getting to one of the bolts was a pain without removing the LHS gearbox mount.
I had to cut the hose because i couldn't slide it off the hose tail.
This filter arrangement has the disadvantage that it only works when the thermostat is open and the oil hot. I removed the filter element from the blue filter body you can see in the picture, and it had some very fine steel particles in it, some so fine they were just like soot, similar to what you get off your magnet filter. I shows there are still particles in circulation despite the magnet in the bottom of the gearbox.
My original intent with this set up was to fit an oil cooler as well, but the GB in my car runs at ambient + 35- 40 deg, cruising at highway speeds, a so i can't see the need for a gear box cooler at the moment. Those who do a lot of heavy towing might feel the need.
I also changed the engine oil & filter, and adjusted the tappets, had a general look around underneath, and sprayed some fleece grease about. there's a bit of surface rust around the front axle & fittings. looking forward to to heading off the rainbow beach etc after new year.
Merry Christmas and safe travels
cheers simmo
