Sounds like mine. I was only getting 450km out of a tank (I believe a Discovery tank is larger than a Defenders too). I disconnected the MAF sensor for the last half of a tank of fuel and managed to get 550km out of that one (perhaps would of been 650km if I had disconnected the MAF at the begining?). I have no installed a TD5 Alive/Alive Tuning uprated MAF sensor and the Booster Box. I'm intending to set the turbo boost pressure to 18psi at the inlet.
Then I'll see how that effects my fuel usage and power lose situation. On a positive note I drove the vehicle today for 30km and it was the best it's been since I've owned it.

I have the same thing happening but in second gear.
In third gear it definitely cuts fuelling.
I mentioned this in my email to td5 Alive when I ordered the modified MAF but no comment.
Did you get the '0' airflow reading in second or third gear?
I am thinking this may have a bit to do with an ECU parameter that I am not aware of.

definitely in second (happened on my way back from work tonight), couldn't say for sure in third but I think it may well do.
Have a look at a thread I started (Td5 air flow issues) - I have posted some graphed data from my Nanocom which show it occurring (of course no info on gear though). See if you think it is similar to yours.

I think, the problem with cutting fuel over 3000revs is made by overboosting the engine by turbo. MAP/IAT sensor in intake manifold is resposible for measuring of the pressure. If you use the Boost box, you will just reduce the maximal output value from MAP sensor. I made this box myself.
First try to clean the MAP sensor and with Nanocom look on the live data - the turbo pressure cannot go over 220kPa (or 120kPa + cca 100kPa of standard air pressure), it it goes over, it will trip the engine ECU to some save mode. This pressure is regulated by wastegate on turbo. In defender just mechanically, in D2 there is a modulator (small box with 3 tubes) used for controlling of the wastegate. Sometimes it also breaks. Also the wastegate can be seized.

Ian had a look at your graph on the airflow thread and It looks like you are over boosting cutting fuelling.
Although your maf reading peaked at around 650 as well?
I thought the max boost pressure for td5 was over 220 but those 2 peaks on the graph look the same, could be a coincidence?

First thing I would do is try running without the Maf (unplug it) .
Truck will run OK just overfuel a bit up to around 2500/3000 revs and then start to under fuel after that as the ECU defaults to a fixed value.
Shouldn't be over boosting unless you have adjusted the waste gate rod so maybe a faulty maf.

Any suggestions on how to remove and clean it? I reckon it's giving a false temp reading and that might be a possible source of my woe. I want to give it a clean and see if it changes things. Given the fault reading I have I reckon it will stand a good chance of being the culprit.

Ian,
the MAP sensor is located in the middle of the inlet manifold.
2 bolts hold it in place and it seals with an O ring.
Unplug it remove the bolts and it comes off pretty easy.
To clean it spray some contact cleaner in the hole that leads to the sensor,
do that a few times and then let it dry out.
Don't poke anything in it if you can avoid it as this can damage the sensor
(apparently).

I give mine a clean and the MAF about every 10k.

Hi all,
Old thread, so sorry to drag it up, but did anyone find a solution to this problem of the MAF topping out and cutting the fuel? I have exactly the same issue on my discovery and I'm a bit stumped on what to do or check next. There seem to be an increasing number of people experiencing the issue, but no solutions anywhere!

At the moment, running with the MAF unplugged resolves the issue, but long term I would like to fix it.
