    RRC air/fuel problem???

    hey guys,
just bought an 87 rangie to tow my larger rangie with,
its a 3.5EFI on duel fuel, been running sweet until i had a pre ignite on the gas and it blew the airflow meter apart.
i repaired the meter but the flap inside was seized. because i had nothing else to do i decided to fit the repaired meter with the flap in its most open positioin and see if there was any difference.
started fine, idled fine, would die as soon as you reved it or after a min or so it would die.
got a second hand air flow meter and just fitted it today, it revs alot better but still dies the same way.
fuel pump and injectors work fine.
ive been told that its common if you blow up the airflow meter it can also cause a spike in the computer.
i can narrow it down to either the computer not communicating with the fuel pump after start up, or its still not receiving a proper signal with air flow, so not giving it enough fuel.
have just pulled battery terminals off to reset the computer, but is there something ive missed?
any help would be great as i kinda need the thing running by the end of the month!

Your talk of blowing up airflow meters with LPG brings back unpleasant memories.
I haven't heard of the computer problem you mention. One of the things that used to happen when my old 3.5 did this was that the idle bypass hose and a/c stepper hose would blow off. Memory is a bit fuzzy tonight- recovering from nightshift- can't fully recall what the symptoms were, whether failing to start or what. Might be worth a look, smallish air hoses in front of and hidden under the plenum chamber.

haha. yeah it wasn't fun. well still isn't. lol.
yeah im still leaning towards an air leak somewhere coz of how it dies like its starved for fuel. will check pretty much every hose on it tomorrow. cheers for that.

You shouldn't run a mechanical air flow meter without an anti-backfire flap fitted. The gadget is unfortunately going to add to the tightness around the manifold air inlet, but it is essential.

    Looks like this:

Lift the cover on your air flow meter and manually move the wiper arm to see if the running improves. It is sometimes necessary to adjust a replacement air flow meter before it will run properly.

Also with the flapper system there is a few hoses around the plenum chamber that can blow off, the fuel pressure reg and overrun shutoff relay vac hoses are behind the plenum and will cause running issues if they are split or not connected.
