    TD5 Starter solenoid replacement

I have bought a Solenoid plunger kit of Ebay for our DEFENDER.
Is it possible to fit the new kit insitu or does the starter motor have to come out???
    Thanks
    Andrew

I looked at mine when it was out to see if it could be done insitu.
I decided that to replace the contacts the plunger touchs would be near on imposible to do on the Disco.
The stugle for the top mount(best done with a 3/8 drive socket) would be easy in comparison

It will be interseting to know if any one has done it though.
    Cheers, Kyle

it can be done insitu, its fiddly but can be done. Its easier than removing the starter

This can be done insitu but it helps if you already know what you are looking at.

I took my starter off today to do this and after removing, cleaning, replacing contacts and plunger and refitting I found that the new contact bolt (power for the starter and where previous owners have jumped onto the positive feed) was not long enough. So rather than removing and re doing I reverted to the old bolts with new contacts whilst the starter was attached, a little fiddly but probably easier than pulling the starter off again.

By removing the starter in comfortable circumstances,if you have the time, & patience, you gain valuable experience in case it has to be done on the side of a track. Just my thinking. EG, there is a nut which can be a pain, but with the right socket & extension, & patience, all good. To take it a step further, that socket & extension are now in my "handy to have " toolbox. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

It should be somewhere in 'The Good Oil' , but to get the top nut off, the only tool combination that does not result in swearing is a 3/8 drive, 6" wobble bar and short (standard) socket. 12 point makes life a little easier but not essential. It is an odd size from memory, maybe 15mm ?

As already stated, doable in situ once you know how it all goes together but probably easier to do the job on the bench.
