Series 1 Land Rover road legs

					I need advice
Can I fit the 10 spline spider gears from a Series I diff to a Disco diff centre to give me better road legs?
Or perhaps I am better to install an overdrive... or both? The old F head was changed for a 2 1/4 litre 40 years ago and since then she has always needed longer legs.
The 2 1/4 OHV is about to be retired for a 200 TDi so I will have the torque to pull the taller gearing.
I look forward to your advice and will tolerate the screams of sacrilege

			changeing diff's ratio's

					Hi Chismac

What year and wheelbase is your Series one?

If it is a 88", with the 3.54 ratio diffs fitted and the 200 TDi, the GVM would be light enough IMHO, to handle it.

The 10" drum brakes however, would not be anywhere good enough. They would be an accident waiting to happen. At the speeds the 200 TDi and higher speed diff ratio are capable of, those drums would get hot very quickly and fade away to nothing.

What you could do is, fit the 11" drum brakes from a six cylinder 2.6 ltr, along with a booster, or better still, work out a way of fitting the Disco disk brakes setup.

Cheers Arthur

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.
She is a 1958 88" soft top with fullly floating rear axles -the only SI to have them factory fitted.
I have a couple of 24 spline disco diffs but by the sound of it I should swap them for some 10 spliners.
Yes, the brakes are to be updated in the bare chassis rebuild. I modified the brakes 35 years ago to SII LWB shoes and drums but it is time for further brake upgrade. I am more cautious these days and there are more idiots on the road.
Cheers

					Hi Chismac

Lucky last post tonight.

The fine spline series three half shaft, may fit into the Discovery diff, I'm a bit hazy on whether they do have the same number of splines.
if they do, it's easy to make an adaptor / spacer to fit under the driving flange to allow the use of the slightly longer, series three half shaft's.

					Hi Steve

What's your latest thoughts on fitting higher speed running gear to the 88" S1?

Did anyone get back to you with more info about fitting the disco diffs?

I have decided the easiest way to go is to grab a pair of early RR 10 spline diffs and just bolt them in. That way I have a pair of Disco diffs to sell and the original 4.7 diffs can go back in if I ever want to put her back to standard.
Cheers
