    High Idle Issues

G'day all i just picked up my 88 Range Rover yesterday its a 3.5 Auto.

I was just running it in the driveway when i changed from petrol to gas then heard a bang from under the bonnet then smelt LPG i popped the hood to find the pipe from the AFM to the inlet manifold had popped off. i put the pipe back on and started the car again.

now the car idles at around 2500 on petrol and when i switch to LPG the car just turns off.

any would be greatly appreciated. Ive only had the thing less than 24HRS!

Welcome to the forum, sorry about the issues you've been having

I think posting this in the technical section or the range rover section might get you more responses and hopefully a resolution

You may have bent the AFM vane unless you had a backfire protection flap in the pipe. You may also have damaged the gas/air mixer, I assume its one of those Impco model 200 things that some installers seem to love. You may also have blown a hose off the idle air control valve. Once you have fixed up those things you will need to look at plugs/leads/timing settings etc. Incorrect settings will often lead to backfires if the system hasn't been set up properly. If you can manage to post up pictures of the gas intake it would help.

    Thanks for your Reply

The Lpg has been on the car for about a year. i drove about 100kms home earlier that day with no issues at all. ive purchased a workshop manual on disc and hope that will arrive soon.

im not very mechanically inclined so im guessing im gonna have to take it to the shop. can anyone recommend a great range rover classic mechanic in the melbourne area that wont bend me over?

G'Day and Welcome to the Forum!! I used to drive an LPG powered Ford Fairlane and occassionally it would backfire with a loud bang and blow the top off the air filter box. I was told it does this when it needs to be tuned!!!Whether that is true or not, I don't know but I am sure the mechanics on the Forum will be able to assist!!

Ausfree that sounded very similar to what happened to mine. im pretty sure the car does need a tune. but i have done searching on here and found that i possible have damaged the AFM .

Also when the bang happened i could smell alot of LPG. does anyone know what the Main circular part of the LPG system under the Bonnet is called? Mixer possibly

can a back fire Ruin this Part?

    1. Probably. Is it in the air inlet to the engine?
    2. Yes.

This is what your engine bay should look like - and at the back next to the plenum on the passenger side are some pipes to do with the cold start. If they are dislodged, you get high idle and the gas won't work. Next, the elbow from the plenum may have a sock on it much like a stubby holder, that covers blowout holes. Again, if it's not on right, no go on gas. Last, you may have dislodged the gas supply line to the mixer (That line that goes over the air intake). Make sure it's tight, because if it's a mixer ring ( Not a impco diaphram setup) then it won't work when loose - sucks in air instead of sucking gas from the converter.
