    Cool Disco Electrical problems

    Help,
I have a 1992 Disco on our Farm (unregistered but much used) I have what seems to be an Electrical fault but I'm buggered if I can find it. The old girl runs fine then stops (seemingly via some main circuit breaker or similar) after a couple of minutes of no starting I can just hear a single "Tink" from the front either in the dash or engine bay and away it will start. The noise sounds like a Thermal overload resetting, but I can't find the bloody thing ! Any Ideas or hints would be great. The Farm is several Hundred Kls from nearest town so local mechanics are few and hard to get.

V8 or 300TDi? The 300TDi has a stop solenoid on the injector pump whose wire comes loose. It needs a quick squeeze with pliers and refitting.

Has the vehicle got an immobiliser fitted? Can you hear the fuel pump run when you turn on the key? Its unlikely to be a circuit breaker, but everything that runs is controlled by relays. The relays are below the steering column area and behind the RH kick panel I believe. You will need a workshop manual, see the "shop" button at the top of the page and purchase a "RAVE" CD manual. Get out a multi meter and check for power at the ignition coil. Check for spark when cranking too.

I'm not sure on the 92 Disco but on the update post 94 Discos there is a black rubber press switch up on the fire wall in the engine bay in front of the passengers side.
This is the reset switch for when you have a crash and cuts the engine off, unlocks doors, starts hazards etc.
After a crash, you press this reset switch and the car will run again.
If the 92 Disco has this switch, maybe it is faulty?

The D1 V8's (pre update model) do have a fuel cut off switch. Can't remember exactly where it is. I think it's under the dash somewhere. It cuts the fuel supply in the event of an accident. It's a relay type thing with a button on it to reset it.

I used to own a 90 (HA) v8 Disco - underneath the airflow meter should be the EFI relay. It's a normal relay, but can corrode. Try replacing it with a similar one from inside ( or a spare ).
