Discovery II 2003a Headlamp wiring upgrade

    Hi,

The headlamp switch on my D2 is playing up (variable delay before the headlights come on after operating the switch). Traxide (Drivesafe) have told me that they do not have a wiring upgrade (with relay) for this model (which uses H7 bulbs) but believes that someone on the forum has modified one of his products for newer headlights. I can't find any mention in a search of the forum - is there anyone who can describe to me how it was done?

Also - when my headlights do come on there is a "click" somewhere as if a relay is operating - does anyone know if there actually is a relay in the update model - don't have a wiring diagram.

(I've also had intermittent problems with the indicators so the switch does appear to be on the way out).

    Thanks
    Rod

There is no relay, and the lights operate directly from the battery via fuses and switch. The switch can be taken out and the contacts cleaned up, if still in reasonable condition. I recommend you try this.

Controlled thru the BCU, not directly thru the switch.

Hmmm, must be different from D2 then. Are you sure?

    Smile

It does seem like it's controlled through the BCU although the LR mechanic who services the car says it is not.
I'll check the switch but there is a variable delay between operating the switch and the lights actually coming on - sometimes almost instant - at other times as much as 1 second. Weird. There is also an audible click from under the dash - sounds like a relay. I'll have to chase a wiring diagram.

    Thanks for the replies.

    I do have one....
Think you'll find D2's are also hence the reason the Nanocom accesses it to do tests like, hmmmmm, let's see, oh yeah, test vehicle outputs such as wipers, windows, lights, indicators, set daytime run light etcetera etcetera etcetera!

I just checked the RAVE schematic. The headlights operate directly through the switch.
One of the symptoms of a failing switch seems to be the lag between turning the switch, and the lights coming on.
I stand to be corrected, but as stated earlier, unless the upgrade model is different from the earlier one, there is no relay or BCU action when manually switching the lights on/off.
There is however a function where the BCU can turn on and monitor the lights via the IDM (intellegent drivers module), but this is not used in the normal mode.

This has got nothing to do with turning the lights on via the switch. But then, you know that, as you have one.

I am not arguing that the BCU cannot turn on the lights.
I repeat, the BCU has no function when using the headlights normally, via the headlight switch.
The relay contact that the BCU/IDM operates, is actually in parallel with the headlight switch, so one can over ride the other.
This allows the BCU to provide the function where you can use your key fob to turn the lights on for thirty seconds after parking, as well as some other functions that I don't pretend to know about.
Take a look at the schematic if you don't believe me.
