    TD5 Compression tester - help!

    Hi All,

I need to compression test a td5 Disco I am having troubles with.

I have seen a couple of references to people who have made a tester using an old injector.

Has anyone done this? And if so do you have any pictures or suggestions on how to do it?

I think the injector version is the only option as I want to be able to do all 5.

Alternatively, and this is a massive long shot, does anyone have one that I could borrow / hire?

    Rgds
    Pete

Ive got a diesel injector test set...

you do know you can only test 4 pots.

    heres the field test.

disconnect the injector circuit, leave the ignition off.

get to the crank nut on the frontand wind the engine over by hand.

you should feel 5 equal resistances, equally spaced,to the turning motion of the crank over 2 full turns of the crank.

    If that works.

    put all the wiring back
    start it up
check the Air flow/mass/pressure readings, if they all make sense look at the balance values on the pots.

the ones with the higher balance values are low on pressure.

    Hey Dave,

With an injector based one I can test all 5, which is why I am after that as opposed to one that plugs into one of the 4 glow plug holes.

The cylinder balances at tick over are inconclusive tbh - and there are no other issues coming up on the nanocom. Ive already rebuilt the top end (after finding a few issues - which didn't fix the issue - a lot of white smoke) and had the head pressure checked so am now trying to decide if it could have a piston/ring failure of even a bent rod.

Very kindly a forum member has offered to lend me his injector based comprssion tester.

    Aulro is an excellent resource.

if you're blowing that much white then you can solve it with just the glow plug based tester. (which my compression tester is) once you have the value from the front 4 the balance value will bring up the last one miss firing.

get out there and mark the exhaust runners with a white crayon first thing in the morning and start it up.

The pots that have the wax discolour the fastest are working the hardest and the ones that discolour the slowest are not pulling their weight. (you can also do this with a IR laser-dot thermometer)

Results are in and it's not good!

    150/165/160/160/160 (yes psi!)

Amazing it still runs and drives ok.

Those values would also explain why the cylinder balance readings weren't much use....

    Apart it comes!

    Yes same engine Ben.

216k or so km on it.

I completely rebuilt the top end with new cam, rockers, injectors etc etc... but the issue still persisted, hence the compression check.

What PSI would you expect on a healthy engine?
