G'day twr7cx.Front and rear diffs every 40,000ks change the oil check every 10,000 ks .Check after water crossings asp,with the transfer case also change at 40,00oks.Ive used Castrol syntrans in the gearbox and transfer case for over 10yrs in my Deefer -400,000ks -doing some hard drives towing with a off-road trailler.My advice ring Castrol and ask to speak to a technical advisor ,in the past I've found them to be very helpfull.http://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/smi...rin.gif.Google castrol this has also helped in the past and the same would for the other oil companies.Hope this is of some help and safe touring.Cheers Lochie
The change period might depend on use or rather "abuse" - especially in the heat and as in water crossings and other hard work compared to a school kid pick up/shopping type car . Some intervals may be down to months [or weeks even] and others could stretch out for years. For my sort of forest track, dirt road and bitumen runner Rangie I reckon on about every 4/5 years and/or about 40/50 000 kms. And the same for the ZF tranny.
They can still pick up condensation water droplets if living in cold conditions [frosts] too so it might pay to factor this in as well.
For me regularly changing these fluids is the best and easiest preventative maintenance things you can do for these generally trouble free whirry bits.

I do a major trip every couple of years and do complete oil changes before the trip. The depending on the trip most likely do the same on return. As others have said a bit of overkill but not really that expensive.

I know the Nulon G70 ( Manual Gearbox and Diff Treatment- Nulon Australia ) used to be really popular! We used to use it in our gearboxs in Valiants and old Falcons, but then they ran very plain oils to start with...
