Weber 500 on Stage 1 Problems

    Hi All,

Replaced my Zenith Carburettors with a Weber 500 Carburetor and Edelbrock Manifold. Problem is that Carburettor seems to deliver too much fuel - just floods the motor. Pretty jack of it. About ready to have the Zenith twins reconditioned but put some good money into the Weber option so want to try to make that work before I put the whole kit on ebay and do some dollars. Any ideas? Do I have to swap the jets out? I am sure I am not exploring new ground here so apologies in advance if this has problem has done to death before. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

A 500 cfm carby will drown a standard 3.5 lt engine. My brother used to have a 302 (4.9lt) in his XC with a 350 Holley on it. It worked very well and gave reasonable fuel economy for an old Cleveland.

Yes. That is what I am finding. What is disturbing is that the carby was independently recommended by two parties.

Interesting ,500 Weber hey ? Sidedraught or Downdowndraft ? Id guess with the edelbrock its more likely a Holley 500 on A 2 TO 4 BARREL ADFAPTER , PICTURES PLEASE ,No such thing ,Probably a Holley 2 barrel Maybe a DCOE,or DGMS,DVA,IDA, IDF . Regardless , 500CFM doesnt mean that much , if you dont know the Velocity .and average CSA of the manifold and the Valve to port ratios . I can make a Rochester quadralet at a rated 780 CFM run perfectly to a 202 Holden six , so your so called 500CFM carb wont be an issue. On severely port choked engines like all Rover V8's your Velocity is almost sonic in the manifold anyway . Lets guess you have a 500 Holley , what are the mains, idles, power valve, and squirter sizes . You can fit the Weber metering block to the carb for adjustable mains and midrange emulsions as well.

Thanks for that. You obviously know carbys and you are giving me some confidence that maybe it can work. It just isn't at the moment. Just floods. Below is a description of the carby I bought - any help would be appreciated:

Carter afb, Edelbrock, Weber. All the same carby with minor improvements/changes. There is no reason why it should not work with the correct jetting. Check here Partsrange items - Get great deals on items on eBay Stores!

I ran a quadrajet on an Edelbrock manifold with absolutely no problems on a 3.5 even though it was way oversized for the engines needs. I recently sold a Carter afb competion carb that ran very well on a standard 3.9 motor. Pity I threw out the jet and metering rod sizes a while back as that would have been a good start.

This is good news. Presumably I will need to swap out the jets. Is this right? Thanks for hooking me up with the parts range link. Will be exploring that further.

The standard Weber 500 is jetted close to suit a 5 litre motor from memory. You will need smaller jets and metering rods as well as on "off Road" (spring loaded) needle and seat if it does not already have one. Parts are readily available from the US. I would see if I could coax the jet and rod sizes out of RPI or do a search on the web to find the sizes close to what you need.

OK, a quick search and found these. They were not selling them or giving out the information when I was playing with mine.

Thanks for this. I will look further into it. Thanks for taking the time to walk me though this. Much appreciated. One of the items on part range is
the Corrective Carb. Needles/Jets for Webber 500/600 Carburettor on 3.5 engines. It says:
The Weber Edelbrock 500 (1404) is not a jet fussy carb. type (unlike the Holly) but we are offering the appropriate jets here for most standard and and larger capacity upgraded V8 engines.
Sounds like this might be just what you are referring to and what I am looking for?
