Im pretty sure its switched
Hi all
Finally found some time to play in the garage. Amongst the jobs is installing the tacho in my 1998 Defender
I am using a VDO 333015037. The issue is power feed.
There are 3 terminals on the back, one negative, one positive and one to the alternator.
Should the power be constant power or switched power via the ignition switch?

Green wire from memory. Jumper it off the fuel and temperature gauge power.

The reason I asked was that when I removed the clock, the purple wire from the back of the clock was constant power. I used the earth and light feed, but wasn't sure if I should use this constant power feed.
I'll grab a switch wire from behind the temperature gauge.

Definitely switched.
Make sure you set the switch on the back if it has one and calibrate the tacho. I have a VDO and it had two points of ca I think One is at mid range about 2000rpm and another low rpm. Some have span and liniarity adjustments. I used an optical tachometer on the crankshaft. It took 3 of us to get it right. One to hold tacho o the crank, one to operate throttle under bonnet and me adjusting the guage.
Sopt on now and much better than a clock. i also moved the other guages to te right and put tacho next to speedo.

Finished fitting tacho tonight...I simply removed the clock, moved the fuel guage to where the clock was and fitted the tacho in it's place.
The only issue...the steering column support hits the back of the tacho when I replaced the binical!! I did notice that the VDO gauge sat deeper into the binical so I had to space it out about 3mm so now it sits flush like the temp and fuel gauge and now it doesn't hit the steering column support.
I will do more testing tomorrow (don't want to wake the kids now by starting the car) to see how accurate it is.
