to grease or not to grease that is the question

So I pulled my warn 9000lb winch apart as it was seized and boy was it seized.

I have finally stripped it down cleaned it up and am ready to reassemble but I am a bit miffed. These things were never greased from factory and they are not water tight I think I should pretty much fill the orbital gears with grease to keep the water out.

    should I or shouldn't I

I regret to inform you that from the factory ALL the gearbox end of the Warn is loaded with grease...

Not packed solid, but a liberal amount of it is in there from the factory.

Absolutely no sign of grease what so ever? I did buy it near new but second hand so the previous owner might have done something to it but I must admit it didn't look like it had been touched.

But Warn winches, along with Engel fridges and Toyotas never break down - that is why you pay more .

Warn use Shell Aeroshell 17 from memory, a synthetic diester MoS2 fortified grease.

    Yep, that's what it is.

Why they need something so trick i'm not sure.

bearing grease should be ok shouldn't it? I have heaps of that laying around the place.

I think I had better start including a yearly pull down of the winch as part of the maintance of the old girl. Ive actually been thinking about making a custom rear bar with it fitted into it and getting a bigger and better one on the front a high mount warn 8274 with twin motors and a larger drum.

This stuff would be bloody brilliant http://australia.cat.com/cda/files/1...EHP6012-02.pdf if you know someone in CAT or mining.

A calcium sulphonate thickener is what is used in the best marine greases.
It resists water washout better than any other thickener and activity stops rust.

Don't you just call Westrac and ask for 129-1937? Or is there more to it than that?
