Before you start looking for "metal" in your pump I would check that the fuel solenoid is working properly, Regards Frank.
Hi My 1994 300 TDi Defender with 368K on the clock has had an issue turning off.
When I turn the key off the motor continues to run until I stall it. I am advised by the local Landrover Dealer that the injector pump has metal in it and the metal is stopping the fuel plunger from seating and allowing diesel to continue to get past to the injectors.
Is this a common issue, where does the metal come from and what is the most economical fix.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Regards
David

Thanks Frank I am only going on what the dealer has told me about the metal is there an easy way for me to test the solenoid at home?
When i pull the wire off it keeps running.
Thanks David
The main issue is you have a round disk that kind of wavy almost cam like and that spins and pushes on little pistons that plate tends to ware out in some pumps have little rollers and they stop turning and every thing goes to hell in a hand basket id say its the fuel cut solenoid
try this start the car and look on the pump there will be 2 wires coming out of a little solenoid unplug it the car should stop running if it doesn't id say that's your problem if you want to check for metal off the top of my head in the center of where the injector lines come out there is a little filter in there but not 100% sure but i know there is one there some where.
When you remove the solenoid, if there is metal jamming the plunger the pump is worn out.
The internals start to wear and the hard facing comes off the wave disc, and jams the solenoid.
The most economical fix is a 2nd hand pump but still not cheap.
Its common fault when the pump wears.
The filter that Tank Jr is talking about is it the inlet banjo bolt at the front of the pump.

OOPS:
... 300tdi has 1(ONE) wire - it's earthed through the solenoid
the cutoff is activated to open when the ignition "on" - you'll blow a fuse if you accidently ground the activation wire with the ignition "on"
it would be interesting to see if disconnecting the wire while the engine is running activates the fuel cutoff - if it does then the problem is in the wiring or ign switch
the problem outlined in the thread is often just some foreign matter from dirty fuel or the tank in the solenoid activated cutoff - dismantle and clean if this is the problem
sometimes going for a run with a bit of wide open throttle can clear such foreign matter - hope it is that simple
Thanks everybody for your helpful suggestions certainly some projects for the weekend I will let you know how I get on
Regards
David
