Problem fitting Rovertracks Axles - Ideas?

I spent quite a while today trying to fit a set of Rovertracks axles into the CV joints on my 1985 110 County. The axles slide in easy enough without the snap ring/circlip on the axle, but no amount of persuasion will get them together with the snap ring fitted.

I'm sure many of you have already figured out what the problem is, but it took me a while. I was using brand new genuine snap rings and they were exactly the same as the ones that came off the the standard axles. The penny finally dropped and I checked the depth of the groove in the axle. It is too shallow and the snap ring is thicker than the depth of the groove.

I have called a couple of places but the general view seems to be that even if I can find a thinner gauge snap ring, it won't do the job properly.

If anyone has a quick and easy solution I'd love to hear it. I can't refit my standard axles as the diff centre is now a fine spline Truetrak. I need to be able to roll the car around the workshop and really don't want to put the stub axles and hubs back on without the axles unless I really have to.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers, Dave.

You might find it easier with an extra pair of hands. Then sit the end of the axle into the splined section of the C.V. Then with 2 thin bladed screw drivers, push the snap ring inward from either side, while at the same time have someone push the axle in to the C.V. It takes a bit of patience and you need to be careful that you don't slip with the screw drivers and stab your fingers.Have used this method hundreds of times.

Thanks Wayne - tried various methods to compress the snap ring. The problem is the snap ring is too thick for the groove. In other words, its diameter is greater than the depth of the groove and there is no way for the CV to get past.

Have you physically checked the diameter of the old snap ring, compared to the new snap ring?Sometimes new snap rings can seem like they are too large, when suddenly they will slip together.
The other thing you could do,is remove the old snap ring from the original, being careful not to damage it,and fit it to the new axle.
I have Rovertracks axles and C.V.s and they are brilliant, and I run 35's without problems.

Thanks Wayne. Old and new snap rings are exactly the same in diameter (ie, wire gauge) and length. I tried an old one just in case anyway - it wouldn't fit for the same reason.

I spoke to Isuzurover on the phone and he mentioned a process I could use which involves putting a small spot weld on each shaft to limit its travel into the diff centre. I don't have any welding gear and wouldn't trust myself not to mess it up anyway.

It seems to me the two alternatives are to find a smaller snap ring or have the groove in the axles machined slightly deeper. By "slightly" I mean at least 1mm, as the groove needs to be quite a bit deeper.

    Anyone have any comments/preferences?

The drive loads are inboard of the snap ring groove so you could carefully deepen the snap ring with an angle grinder fitted with a cutoff wheel.
You can dress the wheel for thickness if necessary by grinding a bit of scrap steel.

So the groove in the original axle is deeper than in the Rovertracks axle?
Have you measured the difference in depth? Is the groove in the original 1 mm deeper than the Rovertracks?
I can see no problem fitting a thinner snap ring if you can find one, maybe try a CV joint repairer.
If not,the cheapest option would be something along the line of what Bill says.

I've got a set of Rovertracks "LongTracks" axles and CV's here. I know they're different from what you are trying to fit, but for reference the circlip is 2.10mm diameter wire and the groove is 2.9mm deep.

    Great idea!

However you don't know Dave's history with angle grinders... I am surprised he still has all his fingers.

Take some emory cloth and dress up the snap ring and groove to get the depth you need. Just a little hand fitting. If you email Keith, perhaps he can pass on some installation 'tricks'. Hope this helps. Mark
