Squeezing two decent sized batteries into a Defender battery box?

    Hi all

I currently have a deep cycle 105 amp/hour battery and a Century NS70 (540cc) battery in the battery box of my Defender (1998 300TDi 130).

The century battery is over 4 years old and came with the vehicle when I bought it over 2 years ago. It is finally dying and I need to replace it. In my opinion this battery is far underpowered for the vehicle (ie warn winch requires a minimum 650cc battery)

I would like to fit a battery that measures 305mm long x 172mmw x 225mmm deep (Century N70ZZ4WD) but the height is the problem. Trying to think of a solution....either cut a hole in the black tin cover plate so the negative terminal sits out under the seat base or somehow cut the hump out the base of the battery box to make a flat floor.

Currently I have the deep cycle battery against the side of the battery box - parallel to the door.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Cheers
    Andrew

Mate,I'm going to cut a battery box in the rear LHS wheel well for my second battery in the X-Tech,I don't want to squeeze an undersize one in the battery box and I'm fitting a sil tank under the drivers side so can't lower the bottom of the box on that side to fit one there.I've just bought a cub camper so having the battery in the rear makes it easier to run power to it anyway. Hi Andrew

I cut the slope out of the floor in my battery box and then welded a folded section back in, this has given me a stronger flat floor and a lot more room.

The two batteries (N70ZZ) are now end on to the door, with the negative posts under the lip near the door and with enough room left to fit my compressor, various relays and a inverter.

To finish this job, I want to ensure some positive ventilation into the box, using a 12volt fan.
First to make sure that any build up of gas from the batteries is expelled and the compressor is kept cool.
But the box will be sealed in a way, so that water and dust is kept out also.

OK - here 'tis (see comment at bottom)

BTW - next time I'm considering going to 2 X Delkor (maybe 1 X NX-110-5MF (620cca) and 1 deep cycle of the same physical size (same as in my Disco 1 in which the N70 is a real squeeze) - (these are only 270mm long)

these have proven in other deefers to have more than enough power and longevity

    Hi All

I will grab the camera for you, I'm still in think mode for how to go about doing the ventilation though.

Heres what i have done with mine, cut out the base, lowered the base by about 20mm, replaced it was a full flat section of stainless with folded sides, its huge now plenty of room for 2x batteries and a large compressor with space to spare.

    Thanks guys...really appreciate the pictures.

So many choices!!! I also rang my local battery bloke which really confused the issue as he was telling me all about optima's....

Will have a bit more of think about it.....

    Cheers
