Don't just think of weight, but also aero dynamics, ambient temp, humidity and wind....another option may be to fit the high range gear set for the lt230 out if a defender.

Imagine doing a hill start with the max legal tow limit of 3500 kgs attached

I wonder how Land Rover managed to get such a high tow rating without an engine that can do it safely, even with standard sized tyres.

Dean I have 35's on mine and it gets off the line pretty good for a 300tdi, but it does have a vnt, bigger intercooler and a bit of a tweak.

I towed a loaded Prado out of the Vic high country with my Tdi and it weighed alot more more than 3.5 tons and it did it safely.Towing that much weight has more to it than the engine, defenders are very strong chassis wise and can do it better than most,it's very easy to change from low to high also. PAT303,
What else did the Prado have in/on it/attached to make it more than 3.5T?? I thought that the Prado was less than 3.5TGVM?

It was loaded to the gunnels with every bloody thing you could imagine as well as four kids.It looked like one of them trucks you see in the middle east with the load 50 feet over the cab and hanging 20 either side. One of the leads went to earth so the thing shut down. Pat

    Couple more............
I was doing a little fishing with the figures.
They are realistic but, as i have nothing to compare them to, are they good, average, poor?????
Also with the low to high shift, am I correct with the procedure sequence?
Clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out, clutch in blip the throttle shift to high, clutch out.
With the ratio's, im not sure which are higher.
Would you shift, low second to high second? Low second to high first? Low forth to high second?
    Sorry 4 the silly questions.
    Cheers Dean.

Start in second/low and just shift to high range as Carle said.

No blip on the up change unless you **** it up, don't get it in and drop too many revs

Dean, what numbers are on the TD04 ?

I quizzed someone from MTQ once and they just install them straight out of the box from MHI, no jigging around changing wheels supposedly.
