Thanks Mate, How do you remove that input gear?, is there a circlip at the rear that holds things in place?

When I fitted my TF box recently there was a lot of wear on splines of the input gear. But the problem is that the input shaft from the gearbox (on a LT85) wears the same so you would need to replace this shaft as well as the input gear.
I don't know an easy way of doing this other than removing the gearbox!
I still have a lot of clunk in the County. I have been right through the driveline and the last thing is the gearbox shaft, everything else has been done. Still very clunky.
Pretty much sorted the backlash on my County V8/LT85.
Input gear/Gearbox main shaft worn & replaced (big job both boxes out & apart)- worn - fixed with cross drilled input gear/new main - Ashcroft
Centre Diff Backlash adjusted. Together with above helped, maybe 30%.
Biggest difference was: Splines on front drive shaft, needed new shaft. Big Difference. Wear could of course be on either/or front or rear shaft.
You may also want to check diff pinion flanges were they go onto the pinion shaft, if you have the drive shafts off. I replaced mine 'cause the seal had grooved the shaft, otherwise fine and so no backlash improvement.
Diff backlash should move at all really unless something is wrong or really done some km's.
Another, albeit slight, clunk on take up, I have eliminated was from the front driver side wheel. Fixed by replacing king pin bearings/bushes, both sides. Perhaps worth checking for up/down wheel movement.

The gear is held between to taper rollers. The 6 bolts on the cover and on the county there is then 2 countersunk allen key bolts to then remove the bearing plate. The gear should come out easily unless the is a problem with it. If you fit a crossdrilled gear be very carefull. These tranfers all look the same but they are not. There is about 6 measurements you should check before putting in as there are a number of gear sets that could be in there. I found out the hard way and had to replace the intermediate gear due to damage to it fitting the incorrect gear. I realised something was wrong when I let the clutch out and stoped it straight away but the 5 second is went round for destroyed both gears. Also a good idea to check and reset the pre load as it will change. there is a shim infront of the front bearing cup and comes in different sizes.

Did you set up the center diff correcty with the center gear shims and the preload? I have the LT85 in my 85 County and have very little backlash. The only problem I have had is the circlip that hold 5th gear on the main shaft brake twice now. I am running s 4.4 though.
