you could do it... but inquiring minds want to know why...
I suspect that the best route would be to find the earth lead out of the motors brush pack and install your resistor in that.
Maybe one for the sparkies, let's see.
I want to install a factory push on/push off dash switch that when engaged halves the speed of the puma aircon fan.
With the switch engaged, selecting any position from 1 to 4 on the fan speed selector, would still alter the fan speed as normal, but the fan would be running at half that of its normal operating speed.
My thinking is that if I choose the right resistor, it would be a simple matter of wiring it in to the circuit via the on/off switch and when it would be pushed 'on', it will halve the current(?) to the fan. When the switch is 'off', it would leave the fan speed as standard.
My clearer thinking tells me nothing is as simple as I would like it to be when it comes to car electronics, so to anyone that knows...
1) Am I on the right track? Is it a just matter of installing a switch and resistor as ive described to make it work?
2) Is the fans operation tied into the puma's computer? If so, would it be in any way that could cause a problem if I muck around with putting additional switches and resistors into the circuit?
Any help is appreciated.

It will need to be a bloody big resistor to deal with the amps.. what's the fuse on that circuit? 20A? A speaker load resistor is the only thing I know that would come close.. and that will limit you to 4 or 8 ohms... ( or 2, 16 whatever)..
But.. why? Direct them away from you!
..tell you what, ill swap you with my county AC.. I promise it will solve your problem![]()

Why? Ok, as a defender owner I deserve to get roasted for this response, but here goes...
There's a couple of reason i want to do this.
First, I've put time and energy into Sound proofing and my audio system.
Second, I have hearing like a dog that has really, really good hearing.
I live for my music but dont like to play it loud. I've got the car to a point that when I play music chugging around town with the windows up and the aircon on, the sound of the fan on the 1st setting detracts from the music; well at least to me. Neurotic I know, but it's my thing.
When Im on the open road or 4wding I don't care, but when I'm battling inner city sydney peak hour traffic after a day of having jack hammers and drills in my ears, the thing that keeps me sane is being cool and quite with my tunes.
What I really want is a fan speed between 0 and 1 which should be quite enough, but I figured a set up like I imagined would also halve the speeds of the other settings and give me more options, just for the heck of it.
Thanks for the advice fellas. So you don't think the computer will choke on my modification?
gotcha...
what your planning will work and shouldnt upset the computer...
what would be smarter would be to pull the wire that feeds the fans high speed and splice in a PWM unit thats rated to drive the fan motor. Then you have a totally variable speed control from juuuust turning to normal flat out. And as a bonus you dont have to deal with the resistor overheating.

Dave, you never fail to deliver.

Matt.

Above and beyond.
The only thing left for you to do is install it!
Let me know when you're available. I'll work around you
Thanks again Dave.
