Steel for firewall repairs

Good idea. The firewall is structural.. so might be an idea to drill holes around the areas to repair - or post pics and others may be able to help out - as some areas use thicker steel than 1mm (eg around the windscreen hinges).

Also be careful putting the rust killer on before you weld it all up as you need clean metal for a good weld. (and it may be flammable....)

Given what I've found so far, I'll be removing a fair bit of paint and seam sealer to see what's underneath. There is some minor corrosion in the toe boards, which are twin skinned, but I think only the top layer has been affected. I might have to invest in one of those little dremel things to make small, fine cuts in tight spaces.

It may be a good idea to use thicker steel in the A pillar. Luckily it hasn't gone all the way around so it shouldn't lose dimension or distort.

And I definitely won't be rustproofing before welding. I don't even like electrical fires. :D

YRM metal solutions is a good site for repair panels. Especially the A/Door pillar.
