I believe the GM box is the way to go and they can be built to 650-700hp. I have mine built to 650-700hp by a guy down on the Vic morington peninsula cost $2500 with low stall convertor. I have had no problems and it feels very strong especially under heavy acceleration. The only thing you have to do is make a adaptor to lt230 transfer case.
Get the VN-VP auto with no computer which you can use a vacuum switch to lock the torque convertor is 4th gear automatically (Summit Racing $70) and you can also lock the convertor in any gear by a toggle switch manually.
